That was MJ's decision.  These were not retros.  They were the original shoes he's had since '85, thus the smaller size.  He came across them in his closet before that game and decide to wear them since it was his last game (or so he/we thought at the time) at the Garden.  The smaller size combined with the lack of technology and cushioning on those shoes is why his feet were killing him.
