When all is said and done, both Spectre and Blofield failed to present themselves as credible threats. Yeah they have all this power and can watch everybody and kill whoever they want whenever, but in terms of dramatic tension I just never for a second believed that they were going to win. Now, this obviously wasn't going to end in Bond's death, just like Dark Knight was never going to end in Batman's death, but there's always the chance to establish a suitable amount of tension for you to wonder if this might really be it for our hero. Dark Knight had it, Casino Royale had it, this film didn't. Also, i'd probably say that the previous three films had better antagonists. But I did enjoy Blofield being a person from Bond's past and the whole "****oo" thing. If anything I think Blofield might've been better used had he never been revealed throughout this film until the finale, and then have another film where the main conflict is directly confronting him and taking him down.
In terms of opening fights and car chases, this film wasn't as good as either Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace, though it was better than Skyfall in my opinion.
I'm all for Bond banging random chicks that he's just met, but this girl's talking about she loves him after what? Two days?!
Minor issue, but that just struck me as incredibly dumb and unnecessary to throw in there. Same with Bond talking about "I'll find you after this is over", Blofield talking about "Only she could understand you" and Bond heading off to who knows where with her at the end. Just seems like they tried to make her the equal/successor to Vesper in this Bond's life and it completely fell flat. (Became extremely evident during the conversation on the train, which they pretty much tried to match with the one from Casino Royale years earlier)
I'm on the fence about Spectre being behind the events of the previous three films. Given the scale of it, it makes sense and many people always suspected it as early as Quantum of Solace, but still. Eh. Just not sure if it works for me personally, as in I don't really think it was necessary. That being said, I did like all the previous films, the older events and villains being acknowledged. I was disappointed in fact that Vesper wasn't mentioned in Skyfall, but I enjoyed seeing that her death, years later, still causes Bond pain in this film. (Was also disappointed that Bond didn't take and watch her interrogation video that Mr. White had in his safehouse. Wasted opportunity for us to see, easily, the best Bond Girl from the Craig films again) So this one had its pros and cons. In the end the payoff was worth it, and the finale where Blofield taunts Bond with pics of characters from the past film was great.
"C" was a terribly obvious villain from the start. There was never a single second where I believed he wouldn't turn out to be on the side of the bad guys, and I in fact hoped he wouldn't so that I could be surprised. Nope. Mallory was handled much better in Skyfall. Presented as a new and somewhat mysteroius figure that'd be interferring with MI6, and there's the possibility that he might turn out to be working with the bad guys from the inside. There's an even chance for it to go either way as he's poised against our heroes, but also makes valid points. "C" was just talking out of his *** and being a douche about it, so of course he ends up as a villain.
Mr. Hinx (Bautista's character), no complaints. Job well done.
Soundtrack, no complaints, probably my favorite out of all four films.
Finale at the old MI6 building, well done, but I didn't care for the boat chase afterwards, or Bond's finale conversation/confrontation with Blofield. That was incredibly dumb.
Bond letting that sexy *** prototype car fall into the river
That'll hurt my soul forever.
Beyond that, I don't think the fight's or anything else was a major drop in quality from the previous films, from the Craig Era or before. I appreciated Q's expanded role and that of M as well, along with Moneypenny once more showing up outside of the office. The opening fight on the helicopter, while not as good as other openings, was still great. The airplane chasing the snowmobiles was great, Bond escaping Spectre's facility was great, so when the action is happening it remains exciting as always. The "meat" of this film, Bond travelling around the world to hunt down Blofield and discover what Spectre is all about, even crashing one of their meetings at one point, kept me entertained throughout. I could already imagine myself going back and watching this film again, whereas i've never wanted to do that with Skyfall (Though I have) In fact, after they first capture Silva in Skyfall I feel that the film went downhill and it started to lose my interest. Whereas Quantum's progression was just ok, but then I thought the finale out in the desert was amazing. In terms of character, Craig's Bond remains spot-on for what's been established in this timeline beforehand and I thought his performance was as good as always. Not the best Bond film, or the best Craig film, but it was still good.
