If socialism works so well, how some the countries of the western world are all indebted to saving nations who have bought their debt so that they can fund the programs of today?

I have no idea what you were trying to ask there...

To me capitalism is having Kobe Bryant, Smush Parker, Luke Walton, Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown as your starting five. Socialism is more like the current Lakers team. Kobe may not be putting up as gaudy numbers but the overall result is significantly better.

@ this guy comparing the lakers to an economic system. With that said i was always taught that everyone gets paid the same amount of money in asocialist economy, so i am confused as to how one could be wealthy in that system.

Some of the most prominent examples would be in finance, automobiles, energy and health care. The President and Congress want to (ironically) keep alive one ofthe legacies of George W. Bush and turn TARP from a temporary rescue plan into a permanent supply of capital. They want to recycle the TARP funds and basicallyhold and "invest" 700 billion dollars indefinitely. In automobiles, the President fired the CEO of GM and broke the law when it came toChrysler's secured debts and is making them turn out cars that fit the agenda of the left wing of the Democratic Party and not market demands.

Energy has gone quite right now but when ever gas prices rise there are threats of nationalization and calls for government to "lead the way onalternative fuels." This means that government controls the capital that flows into research and development for new forms of energy. In health care, thereason why a public option is so important is because the ultimate goal for many of its advocates is to use it as a wedge into single payer, use public fundsto undercut private insurance and once a monopoly has been established become stingy with public funds.

This would not be a problem if doing these things were costless but they cost us in two ways. Taxes must be taken from other people's wallets and then thatmoney is invested based on politics and less on the potential for real results. So not only are tax dollars wasted but higher tax rates discourage hard workand innovation and that weakens the economy further and lowers the standard of living for the average person.

Socialism isn't bad. But Stalin and all those other murderers who killed many people in the name of socialism definitely gave it a bad name.

No nation on earth is exclusively capitalist or socialist. In fact it's virtually impossible to be a true capitalist society or a true socialist society.

However, true capitalism is superior to socialism but no nation will ever achieve an exclusively capitalist society so long as human beings are fundamentally human (if that makes any sense

There will never be true socialism,or true capitalism; so what is the reasoning behind stating that capitalism is better?

There has never been true socialism. Communism is not the same as socialism. In theory, there needs to be a stage of capitalism before true socialism emerges.

To say one system is better than the other is ignorant. It is all a matter of who benefits from which system and the pros and cons from each system.

I laughed my *%@ off one day in an MBA class during a discussion of the government potentially owning financial institutions and auto companies when a kidreferred to the post office and public schools as entities that the public already run (as in saying the government is perfectly capable of running businesses)and was dead serious.

People from all over the world come to this country for medical treatment and medicine, I'm the first to admit that socialism has saved capitalism on a fewoccasions but the health care thing is ridiculous. It'll just end up like social security and welfare, broken and broke.

Stick with MLK and Malcolm X in his later years as your revolutionary heroes, Che Guevara is a murdering over hyped martyr who did only wrong in this world.

Oh please.. You must've hated socialism in the first place if you think there is any wisdom behind this quote.. And nothing written in this threadwould've made you give socialism half a chance.

Come to Scandinavia and see how "they're running out of other people's money" and live like bums in their welfare societies.

People are the problem. If people were rational and concerned about their fellow man, capitalism would work perfectly. The problem is that most people are selfish and could care less what happens to the next man (see HovKid's reply).
I would argue that selfishness is what thrives capitalism. Breaking down the family structure and making each individual a potential buyer.

This is what our public education gets us. Kids who think socialism is cool and works.
I am gonna be a socialist too. It has worked out so well everywhere they try it.
