I did a 5k like 10+ years ago. It’s okay but I’ll never do it again.
Not that it’s enduring but the cost. Im not for recognition or attention. Doing that 5k or Spartan race, tough mudders etc is just proving you exercised a lot to other people? Not for me lol

I’ve volunteered at events like this. Athletes who reach this point are often really out of it- they’re normally really nice, polite people (we see them all over town the day before and they’re super nice and chill), but at this point in time, they’re not firing on all cylinders.
In an Ironman, they have a specific “drop zone” for trash and bottles- if they drop within the zone, one of the “trash volunteers” is on hand to pick it up. I think there’s a penalty or something if they drop trash outside the zone. Dropping isn’t rude- it’s expected and that’s why we’re there! Most of the time, we didn’t even have proper cans- just volunteers with bags who ran in and grabbed the bottles and cups.
