how beneficial is a motorcycle?

Yes a motorcyle is beneficial, especially for gas purposes.  Traffic is never an issue.  I guess it mostly depends on where you live, and how the weather is.  I refuse to be that guy that rides in the rain and cold weather so I ride only during the spring and summer.

They're dangerous but with the way gas is going now would be the time to get one.
"If you own a motorcycle for 10 years there is a 90% chance you will get in an accident"

you can. - it's called lane splitting
but it's not legal except for CA

Personally. I think it should be allowed when traffic is stopped.

From an investment standpoint, it's awesome. Although similar savings can be found with a scooter, but that doesn't nearly have the appeal and power that a motorcycle has. Parking is a breeze as well. Downside would definitely be safety, since there's a higher chance of being severely injured in the event of an accident. The safety factor is the only reason why I haven't been able to get one. Friends, family, and others are always shooting down the idea, especially since a close friend died in a solo motorcycle accident a couple weeks ago.

IMO the only bike that would be beneficial to driving a car is a 250cc bike. I say this because I have a ZX6r and it takes 93 oct and I find myself filling up a lot more, the more I ride. The 250cc bike get great gas mileage on a lil tank and uses regular gas.

I wish I had the loot to get the Can-Am, but even that would be risky in Central Jersey. Just so many pot holes, and brainless drivers.

Well once the rain begins I find that people usually drive a lot more timid and have a habit of making stupid mistakes (i.e. running red lights, switching lanes without looking, etc.)  So from experience I avoid riding in the rain.  If you have to ride in the rain then just be extra cautious and remember your tires will be slicker due to the dirt/grease/water mix on the road so be mindful of how you lean on turns and your throttle/clutch control in general.
I remember going 120 mph on the San Mateo bridge on a very rainy/windy day and the rain stung like hell!  In hindsight its incredibly stupid but I understand and acknowledge the risks that I'm taking so I understand the consequences are very real and I accept it.

Bottom line: don't ride out of your comfort zone and just take it easy.
