um lebron and kobe i dont think so. hell it get posted all the time on here the youtube of jason williams doing up gp. and i still say jkidd>gp as far as defending goes.

.....thats it? thats your only defense is that play with jwill?

....oh and Payton isnt talking reckless, he's telling the truth.

Um please show me where gp shut mj down? Im the last to ride mj, but come on be foreal. And byron russell lol are u serious? Even with hand checking you do realize these players are slower and weaker by a great margin.

Bryon Russell was a great defender. used to give MJ fits. No one will forget the one shot tho. Just like all of nt will never forget Jason Williams getting GP.

Yes he was but him nor gp shut mj down. And yes mj offhanded him but he really didnt need to. He beat him off the dribble anyways. But i seriously doubt either could shut down kobe, lebron, wade etc...

Maybe on the perimeter. Kobe would post him up with ease though. Which is strange, because Payton was actually a good post up player for a guard.

Gary Payton could guard lebron with his trash talk alone. He would be saying some WILD stuff

Fits as in making him break a sweat and still busting his rear end type of fits? I swear time passed makes the mind see things. He was a solid defender, great isn't a word I would use for him. He didn't give Jordan fits though.

Depending on which set of NBA rules, GP would definitely give KB and LBJ major fits. He'd probably get into LBJ's head with his yapping as well.

In the 96 finals. GP held MJ to around 36% shooting when he started guarding him full-time from games 4-6. With hand-checking and more leniency towards issuing techs, I'd give the benefit of the doubt to a prime GP.

He is out of bounds for the Bryon Russell comment though.

Did you hear him as in byron talk about how he for the most part shut mj down that series. And i agree he was good/servicable defender but great is lol.

Perhaps his version of "Shut Down" is different from mine. There is no way in Kobe's prime (02-03 - 06-07) that Gary would "Shut Him Down." Maybe slow him a bit, shoot a poor percentage, but he'll still get his 25.

Same for Lebron except I highly doubt he'll stop him from shooting a low percentage.

see using handchecking would hurt him more then help esp with lebron. He is giving up 50+ lbs not to mention strength and speed/quickness. And also the height department with kobe/lebron.

There's always gotta be a "Kobe Stopper"

... and yet, nobody ever succeeds. It is what it is though, and this is coming from a big GP fan!

Kobe in his prime? we talkin 03-07',08'-ishh kobe? He wiling. no way. I dont see it. These were times KB was eating up 3 defenders at a time. How is one gonna cause problems? Bruce Bowen was one of the best, mainly because he was dirty as %!+!. Once Kob found a way to work him out, %*+$ was cake. Lebron, would just drop that shoulder a few times to back him down. Only thing is, Lebron's mental toughness. I dont know how he'd respond to the berrage of trash talk spewing from GP's lips. KG has nothing on dudes roast game. The Glove wouldnt stop prime A.I. either.
