A spring that had fallen off Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car flew up and struck Massa in the helmet, apparently dazing him as the Ferrari continued straight through a curb, across the track and through the gravel area alongside the circuit before slamming into a row of protective tires that line the circuit wall.

Massa to undergo surgery, to be placed in intensive care
25/07/09 18:15
A worrying time for all following Massa's accident
The early signs had been relatively encouraging following Felipe Massa's accident today during qualification for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Sadly the team has confirmed that the Brazilian's condition is worse than previously reported.
"After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary, Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest," the statement began. "Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable.
"Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion.
These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care."
More information is expected to become available later tonight.
Oh dear...

.. terrible. hopefully this won't affect his health long term. that skull damage and concussion was so severe that they had to perform surgery, that alarms me. i don't know much about how this kind of an injury affects people both in short and long term but i dearly hope he can get back to 100% and life will remain unchanged for him.
any info on where exactly that spring came from and why it did etc? at the speeds at which these guys are driving, an aerial projectile is so ridiculously dangerous. what a freak accident
Came from the back of Rubens car....apparently some part of the rear suspension.
Brawn investigating rear-wing failure
Saturday 25th July 2009
Brawn are investigating why a piece of the rear-wing on Rubens Barrichello's car flew off during qualifying in Hungary.
While the cause-and-effect relationship has not yet been officially confirmed, it is believed it was spring from a damper that that fell off Barrichello's car that was the piece of debris which then struck Felipe Massa, resulting in the Ferrari driver's chilling accident.
"We had a problem at the back, so we are still investigating and we haven't had the piece back from the FIA yet so once we get it back we can understand what occurred and then draw some conclusions," team boss Ross Brawn told Autosport.
"It is the first time we've had a problem with the car. The car has been really reliable and we are obviously looking all through the data to understand what caused the problem. It is hard to comment at the moment until we have studied everything.
"We put a new component on Jenson's car in qualifying just to be safe, but we are still studying everything that went on to understand what happened."
In his blog, former ITV commentator James Allen reported that 'I've spoken to someone who has held the spring in question and it is around five inches long, coiled metal and quite heavy. Massa is incredibly lucky to have survived an impact like that with only light injuries.'
Massa in 'life-threatening condition'
Saturday 25th July 2009
Felipe Massa has been described as being in a "serious, life-threatening but stable" condition by the doctors who carried out emergency surgery on his fractured skull.
Massa underwent surgery on Saturday night after being hurt in a high-speed crash during qualifying for the Hungarian GP.
According to the Associated Press, 'Officials at the AEK military hospital said that Massa will be kept sedated on a respirator in an intensive care unit.
'Medical director Peter Bazso said at a news conference that "Massa's condition is serious, life-threatening but stable."
'Bazso and chief surgeon Lajos Zsiros say they expect Massa to be awoken Sunday.'
The Brazilian was injured after being hit by a piece of debris that is believed to have fallen off the rear of Rubens Barrichello's Brawn.
In a short statement released on Saturday night after Massa underwent surgery, Ferrari announced that the 'Outcome of the procedure was positive' and that their driver would remain in observation in intensive care.
The team will release a further update on his condition on Sunday morning.
