Not at all. It isn't all THAT bad. But compared to the level of softness brought about by the Lunars, they're dookie. Heck, Lunarlon cushioning makes regular Nike Air pretty crummy by comparison. It really all comes down to preference. Do you prefer a soft, plush, and squishy feel immediately apparent with the first steps you take in your shoes? Or would you rather have the liberating set up of Free (although it is at the cost of inferior cushioning). Some people are more comfortable being able to retain as much of the natural motion of the foot as possible, others prefer to have a softer ride. Based on the responses in this thread, most people (including myself) prefer the comfort that Lunarlon has to offer. Is the free sole that bad? I've personally never worn a pair but I like the look and it can't be the horrible can it?
Yeah, Frees tend to be pretty low, but I think that's really to help keep that barefoot-like experience. It super low to the ground. Personally I feel like it messes up the shape.& they are not as comfortable
I probably already answered this in my first response, but I think it'd be good to emphasize and summarize. Basically it goes like this:The only thing I've heard about the free sole thus far is that it's low to the ground? That just doesn't sound like that big of a deal breaker but you guys are scaring me lol now I'm wondering if I should just get a lunar pair customized to look like the GTP
Lunarlon Pros:
-Soft and squishy with every step you take
-Feels like you're basically walking on a slightly firmer memory foam
-Greater distribution of pressure that your feet apply
Lunarlon Cons:
-Some people claim that their feet hurt after wearing them for a while. I'm willing to bet that those people who made such claims probably have had extended periods of standing in their shoes and not as much walking around. The pressure dissipation properties of Lunarlon has its limits, if you don't give the foam a chance to recover their original shape by having your feet apply constant pressure to the exact same pressure points by virtue of standing around, then the pressure will inevitably be felt by your feet. If you plan on walking around and not standing still much, you should have no problems with Lunarlon.
Free Pros:
-Bare-foot like experience.
-Natural motion of your feet better retained/ shoes are less constraining
-Flexion and extension of the feet are better encouraged
Free Cons:
-You might not really like the bare-foot like experience
-Minimal cushioning
-In terms of the Chukkas, it's quite possible that you may not like the appearance as much as the original Lunar Chukkas
Perhaps you're a consumer that enjoys shoes that are more liberating? But I'm surprised you can't stand the Lunar soles, do you tend to stand still a lot when you're wearing Lunars? Or do they still hurt even when you're walking?
Everyone's different, for me the free sole is 10000000x times more comfortable, brought me back to my interest in the chukkas. I can't stand the Lunar sole, one of the most painful shoes I own.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe there's a bit of a discrepancy here. You mentioned that Frees are "constrictive and more rigid" while Lunars are "super soft and extremely flexible in all directions." It looks like you may have mixed up the benefits of the two technologies, lol.
The Free sole feels different. The version that is on all the new Free chukka releases (Free 3.0?) is perfectly comfortable, but feels like a Free, but if you've worn Lunars, the problem is that the Free feels very constrictive and more rigid, where the Lunars feel super soft and extremely flexible in all directions. I found the 5.0 sole on the Uni Golds to be extremely comfortable, much better than the Free sole they are using on these new FK Chukkas. I bought the Volt / Orange color way because I couldn't resist the combo. The Free sole is ugly as hell in my opinion, but on that orange color way, I can definitely live with it.
Frees, by design, are the ones that are flexible in all directions. Lunar outsoles on the Chukkas don't have such flex grooves, and thus are the more constrictive and rigid soles.
Also, for those that may not know, the lower the number on Frees, the more bare-foot the feel (with 0 being totally barefoot and 10 being your regular shoes)
