You asked your future in-laws to hold the ring for you? Wow, I don't even trust my in-laws with simple things lol.

But you're exactly right, if you have to talk to her parents to get their approval or blessing. Meet with them and tell them your plans, rather than asking for their approval.

Shows that you have everything planned out and that you're ready to take care of business.

I looked at it as a time to talk to my wife's father about our future together and also a time to get some gems from a man that has been married for over 30 years. And something I didn't even think of at the time was, if he wanted to contribute to the wedding financially then it would give him more time to line things up. It's just a respectful gesture.

i might be wrong here but i don't think too many people are actually ASKING the father for PERMISSION to marry. in my case, i was just asking for his blessing. i think for most, it's just a sign of respect. if her dad was a bumass deadbeat, i wouldn't have met up with him for that convo.

I was with her for 8 years before we got engaged, living together aswell, now please sit down and quit talking **** ya don't know crap about....talmbout "asking for permission"

Like I said the convo was had before I popped the question, I TOLD him I was marrying her, he was very pleased and very happy, ask me has he worried about his daughter in any sense of the word since we been together, ya really just like to push my buttons and say the dumbest **** just to look silly as hell.

then i would say shop around. i believe those should be about the going price from most jewelry stores. even department stores like jc penny has sets like those too in that range if thats your budget. might even have like some discounts if you sign up for a jc penny card or something. yes i know its not the ideal place to shop, but if your on that budget, it doesnt hurt to check. of course ill get flamed for suggesting it.

as you can see the gold to platinum band really makes it jump in price. some women dont care. gold is enough for them. but then theres some who gotta have platinum. but if your lady doesnt care. you already saw for yourself you can save a lot with gold. for some, they cant even distinguish the diff from white gold or paltinum. maybe after a while of looking, they will see the diff between the 2. but if its casual glances with the ring already on the finger, really its hard to tell. women prob just like to brag when they describe the ring to say platinum. but gold is better than ghetto stainless steel lol.

on that note, if you go for gold instead of platinum but you were already willing to spend $3K, find one with a bigger center diamond. there is always something in the price range. if one place doesn't check others. just make sure its a reputable shop so they arent giving you false info on the grading/material etc.

I wouldn't go with that 3 months worth of salary. If you really look at the history of engagement rings that "rule" was created by an ad agency for diamonds. They pretty much made up their own price point.

So was the fact that diamonds are actually worth something, but try telling that to a lot of women when you try to go ring shopping. That is NOT the time to have that discussion.
