Dressing Better Vol 2.0

can anyone, maybe wj4, recommend me a good tailor in the LA area (i live closer to Glendale but i am willing to travel)? i have a suit that i would like to get altered. i have already gotten my pants hemmed but there are some other things (shortening sleeves, tapering jacket a bit more, and bringing the seat in) that i would like to get done. thanks in advance.

There's been a bunch of really good sales lately...30% off Canvas by Land's End, 40% J Crew sale, 25% off Gap sale, 30% off Bloomingdale's sale and I think Nordstrom has their yearly sale around now (haven't been lately).  Definitely a good time of the year to stock up if you need to.

If you like Zara, there's a TON of items on sale on that website, free shipping or in-store pickup.

Do all of you all dress how YOU want and not worry about what people say? I know everyone says they do but deep down some think about whats in style or what people think. The only reason I ask is because I'm a pretty simple t-shirt and shorts kind of guy or hoody and sweats when it's cold. I was thinking about changing it up a little but I don't want to seem like I'm trying to be something I'm not or be out of my comfort zone and conform to what other people think I should dress like. So what are some ideas to dress better but still keep it real simple.

Yes and No. I work in a court house, so its kind of hood. Dudes be wearing them zoot (sp) suits, and linen shorts sets and **** to court. When I pass by I hear people say crap like "damn dude bought that suit too damn small" when in actuality its a slim suit b/c im a slim guy. My fit is on point w/ most people on here. So, I dont care what people who have no clue about style and dressing formally think.
I do listen to the opinions of stylish people though. I usually lurk this thread, but it has been very helpful to me. I'm horrible with colors when it comes to suits! HORRIBLE! If it wasn't for NT and other fashion outlets I'd wear nothing but white dress ***** and solid colored ties, b/c I don't want to look like an idiot and dont know what the hell I'm doing. Listening to the RIGHT people has allowed to to step out of my comfort zone and step my dress game up.
Dressing "better" is a process. It'll be a little uncomfortable at first. I usually wear jeans/camo shorts and a t-shirt when I'm not at work or a club. For me its about dressing right for the occasion. Nothing wrong w/ dressing down for simple stuff. Others may disagree, a lot of dudes in here wear fitted shorts and dress shirts as comfortable gear. I personally don't get down like that. Do whats comfortable to you and be able to dress for any occasion is how I do it.

So after figuring out how to reply to both posts at the same time lol..

To retrospect90 initially when you start changing your style of dress, especially if it is somewhat dramatic people will notice and people will talk. I know I had that happen to me a lot, especially the comments about trying to be someone else. Ideas to dress better and keep it simple, is still do you. You mentioned t-shirts, why not wear some chinos with some plain tee's and some Jack Purcell's or dress shoes for example. Hoody, replace the hoody with a V-neck sweater and a button down top, change the sweats for some jeans, shoes you can do some boots or some dress shoes as well. Plus at the end of the day, who cares, if you feel comfortable and walk around with that confidence the comments will stop.

CJ003, I completely agree as well with the "damn dude bought that suit too damn small" comment. As most of you know I'm not a small guy so the assumption is always to wear loose clothing, super loose clothing, ah no. I've gotten from my co-workers (I'm a teacher), specifically my male co-workers the your suit is too small, it's isn't it just fits properly. The main one I still get to this day is again from my male co-workers, regarding where I'm going later in the day (like a date, interview, usually it's "ahhh you must have a date") when it's just the fact that I give a crap about how I look. It's not that they don't but I can tell you right now that even the smallest guy at work wears his clothing about 2 sizes too big and square toe shoes are staple amongst most of the men at work or the pointy slip ons. If I even wear a blazer to work most of the guys think I'm either going on a date or trying to show them up. I actually got fed up the last week of school, since no students are present mostly all the males just dress like if they're at home, and I wore a button down, jeans and a blazer (my Bespoke suit jacket to be exact). The comment was made and as much as I insisted that I just wanted to wear a blazer they kept at it. I responded with "no I just care about how I dress and considering I've waited 6 months for this jacket, I'm wearing it." My principal is in a suit everyday and not well fitting ones so the times I've worn suits to work which fit better than his, I've even gotten sarcastic comments from him. I don't care, my thing is, it's not my fault I know how to dress . Not surprising it's the women at work whom I get the most compliments from. At least 3-4 of the women (staff of 45 teachers, about 28-30 female), compliment me on a weekly basis and I think the men at work hate that. I once was told by one of the women that my pants were too short because I cut them at my ankle for my loafers and no socks, I let her know that no this is how you are suppose to wear your pants not having 8 inches of fabric piling up, it shut her up. Too many people don't know how to dress properly in terms of fit and proportion and that's why when they see people like a lot of us here who take the time to put ourselves together and wear things that fit that we are "trying too hard."

At the end of the day, do you. Be comfortable. Be Confident. Be You.

Good stuff. Will keep my eye on this thread just as close as the last.

I do think that sometimes those dudes from StreetEtiquette overdo it.

No hate though, they're doing their own thing and are on their grind. I just prefer simpler and cleaner looks.

But yes, style is definitely subjective.

This is a great thread for everyone, no matter what stage of the "dressing better" game you are in. Never understood the hate this thread gets.

if you are comfortable who cares what others say, they are not buying your gear. I personally could care less if someone disagrees with how i dress. being confident in what i have on has always been the main thing for me. style wise, i believe there is a time and place for everything. i do the basketball shorts, foams and fitted sometimes when im running around or whatever, but in most situations i feel that look is unacceptable at my age. it all depends on the situation.

I got a question. How do y'all decide what to dry clean and what to machine wash?

I only dry clean jackets and sweaters and stuff i can not iron. before i learned how to iron dress shirts effectively i would dry clean those too.

Anything you're afraid will shrink should be dry cleaned as well as suits, blazers, dress shirts etc...I generally just stick to what the tags say but if I feel questionable about it,I will go ahead and have it dry cleaned.

Considering adding a pair to the collection....on the fence.

(bear in mind, the green pair, would most likely be worn with orange laces)

I like how through all the hate they recieved when they first started....mainly from NT. They've turned their blog into a really successful one.
Those guys are really unique too

Please don't dress like herbs in this thread.

Dressing better means dressing better, not just because RFX tells you its chill.

I'm inclined to think that the people saying your clothes are tight are right based on most of the fits I see in the Dressing better threads.

Hey there, you're practically my neighbor. PM sent.

Aside from the suggestion on the label, I always dry clean my trousers to avoid any possibility of shrinking. I had a bad experience several years ago when an expensive pair of pants shrunk in the wash, never again! I also dry clean all of my sweaters otherwise the label notes anything differently.

These look good on magazine, but not realistic. Articles of clothes are too tight, and will restrict movement. I tried to duplicate the look before and fell into its peril.

Will be following this thread very closely. Unfourtunately, I don't have the big budget some of you guys have.

Glad to see this new thread started back up again, gonna miss the old one but it's good to start fresh...I'm gonna be ordering those pieces to make a full grain belt today, and I'll post pics once I get them and finish the staining process and everything

That's why you find stuff that fits. You can easily replicate those looks if you want to.
I think fit is the most important thing. Most people can't seem to get that part right. Even I struggle with it, especially with shirts.
WJ4 I think you have some of the best fitting shirts that I've seen. Here and on SF
