my old dogs groomer retired, she cut him for 14 years. We asked her who to go to with the new dog and she said just diy and gave us a grooming table and some super expensive clippers so shout out to her.

Anyways me and my wife did our best. Not perfect but we didn’t traumatize him and it’s good enough.

I do the cut on my dog as well. It’s not perfect like a groomer but the vet which has been the family vet said it’s better to do it imperfect at home and cause less stress to the dog than to give the dog away for a few hours where the dog gets nervous around a new person and potentially thinking you aren’t coming back. I’ll sacrifice the 2 hours every 6-9 weeks.

One pic is how long I let him grow usually and other is when he’s cut. The legs and face I actually have my mom hold him for me while I do it. Just makes it easier.

But yea your wife and you can handle it.

Yeah the vet told me the exact same thing.

Plus it was different with my old dog, he knew the groomer and didn’t care at all.

your cut looks good, I’m not letting his hair go so long next time, he was a mess.

We did the same with the legs and face, good enough for a stray from a swamp.

Yea it’s solid. And you’ll get better over time. My one suggestion is to get 2-3 extra of each length blades you want to use on the dog . This way you can swap them as they get hot to cooler ones and can rotate them so you’re constantly working with a cool one. They get hot quickly. I said each type of blade because I give him a closer cut in the summer than in the winter where I don’t want him to feel so cold. Even though he wears sweaters and jackets in the winter to stay warm for walks.

Also if your dog hates clippers on the legs as many dogs do there is a good electric trimmer I recommend. Let me know if you do.

He’ll get use to it all over time. He definitely feels safer with you and the wife doing it than if someone else did it.

The tail I just do like I do his back. Except I keep an extended amount of hair at the end of his tail so it sort of floofs alone when he’s talking. Some dogs are very sensitive with their tails and feet so just need to figure that out.

If you have two people you could probably. Worst thing you can do is mess up his hair.

I’ve had schnauzers all my life and they are so scared of the vet. They also dislike people they don’t know very much.
