Does Eminem belong in GOAT of all time conversation?

You said no one is checking for him, stop changing your argument everytime it's proved invalid
Havent changed my argument one bit. I'm not gonna let 15 yr old girls and the hip-hop fans of Madison, Wisconsin dictate who should be the GOAT in the history of hip-hop. Eminem's 10 mil sales do not equal Jay-Z's 10 mil in sales.

So no true hip hops fans listen to Em

Oh okay

I dont know I guess some "true" hip hop fans do still listen to him. But i'm pretty sure no hip-hop fans are expecting a new Eminem album, should it ever come, to be some sort of moment in hip-hop like new Jay, Nas, Outkast, etc. albums are. At this point, they just come and go.

That whose checking for him thing got me :rollin

Also, there are tons of black people who know how dope Eminem is regardless of some of his content. But they (we) also realize how medicore his last 3 albums were, and may have soured on him a bit. Its hard keeping your favorite artists on on your top 5/ten list when they have pumped out underwhelming stuff for a long time, while showing flashes of greatness that remind you of why they are your faves in the first place. That's why when someone asks who my faves are, Em and Jay aren't the first people I mention.

How do you guys factor in groups when deciding the GOAT? If we're including groups EM would make my top ten. No groups, he's top 5. All opinion though....

1. Pac
2. Big
3. NWA
4. Tribe
5. PE
6. OutKast
7. Run DMC
8. Jay
9. Nas
10. EM
11. Rakim
12. Ice Cube
13. Snoop

you can knock any rapper for a number of things

eminem's the best selling rap artist ever , he's had great longevity , he's by all account a great lyricist , very well respected

amongst his peers and has a nasty flow . he's definitely in the discussion as are rakim,jay-z,nas,biggie,pac and ice cube .

rakims longevity could be questioned , but without him theres no nas.

nas's ear for production is a question mark

people will tell you there was sign's on big's second album he was

heading towards a more pop/commercial/mainstream driven music

and thats what diddy was molding him into......so then you question

artistic integrity....then you got the "jay-z got his style from big before

big he was rocking hawaiian shirts" anyway you slice it theres no clear cut goat

If Eminem aint **** why are all your favorite rappers foaming at one point or another foaming at the mouth to collab with him. Hova included :rolleyes they must've also noticed how garbage he is.

10000% he belongs in the conversation for GOAT.  I don't think most hip-hop heads would question him being mentioned anywhere in the top 5, even if they're not fans of his.

Ghostface>Em, that's just me though. His overall body of work ***** on Em's. Em is still top 10 to me.

Which one? Each artist I named have at least a classic album, and all of them got hits

And ALL changed the rap game for the better

How did bow wow change the game? Especially for the better

Bow Wow has a Classic?

This album is a classic

And the way that bow wow changed the game for the better is that he gave young dudes hope, had all the teens wanting to be rappers.. Honestly if it wasn't for bow wow's success in the early 2000s, I'm not sure if rap would still be relevant today

ok this is obviously trolling, but Lil Wayne came out at 14, I'd say he did slightly more.

and Doggy Bag a classic? you still bump it dog?

They wanted to do features with him because he sold records. 2 chains is heavy on features right now but is he the GOAT? Same goes with wayne, Drake , Nicki , 50 at one point, etc. Those who sell records, get radio spin, buzzing in the club will get the calls. Em had a "die hard" core fan group that cared nothing about hip hop culture and know nothing about its history. He tapped into the MTV TRL pop audience and gave them something they can relate to. His numbers to me cant be compared because those numbers don't belong to the hip hop community.

Those kids went to the store with their parents money and didn't make choice between Em ,Jay or DMX. It was EM, Britney spears or Backstreet Boys. Those fans did not know anything about hip hop so how can their voice hold weight against the voice of the fans of a Biggie, Pac or Nas. Their fans know and understand the culture they can tell the difference between an unorganized screaming rambling 16 against a well planned orchestrated one.

Everyone's list is opinion but if you refuse to take others arguments with a grain of salt and just want to push your agenda then you are a troll.

In my opinion he is a very successful musician with a tremendous lyrical ability but he is not my favorite rapper. Nor do i respect his career catalog enough for me to put him in conversation for the GOAT

Comparing Eminem to the beastie boys...you know what I mean and you know im right.

You are and were still dead wrong with your point of Eminem making it okay for white people to listen to rap, dead wrong.  Instead of you saying, "thanks fellas for putting onto game" or "thanks for helping me see the error in my ways" you doubled down on your mistake and make a bad situation for you even worse.  The Beastie Boys helped usher in the white audience into hip hop and still remained true to the culture.  If you want to take it even one step further, the Run DMC and Aerosmith mash-up of "Walk this Way" made it okay for white people to listen to hip hop as well.  In the words of the late great Biggie Smalls coming off the anniversary of his death, it's appropriate to recite one of his quotes............."It's obvious the games new to ya (Jay02)"!!
And not relating to his music isn't a good reason to demote him from where he belongs. Unless you guys can totally relate to having huge yachts with and unlimited amount of good looking women on board. You can't personally relate to that and very very few can personally relate to eminem.
If someone is not able to relate to something, that means there's a lack of connection.  If there is no connection to an artist or their music that means their songs or albums are most likely not going to be played or listening to by that individual.  Now if a good percentage of people WITHIN the hip hop community say they can't relate to Eminem that means his music is not going to be carried on throughout the years, which is truly how a rapper/artist is remembered by.  Within the hip hop community or hip hop neighborhoods Eminem does not have a strong presence and his music is not being played at a high volume.
But it's his art, its interesting and he's damn good at it. Just because you dont like Tom Brady doesnt mean he doesnt belong where he does in the all time greats
Again, I think any and everyone can recognized that Eminem is highly skilled as a rapper.  I don't think anyone is trying to that that away from him.  With that being said, that doesn't mean folks like or enjoy listening to him just because he is skilled.

obviously millions of people like and enjoy listening to him, thats what makes him the best selling hip hop artist of all time...whether its teeny bopper white girls, or any other demographic, they enjoy it and they buy it

Have you done your 2013 Eminem Census yet?

It's funny when the hip hop community was upset for the lack of mainstream attention and now in 2013, you lack credibility if you receive it according to "true" hip hop people

"Let's do the math, If I was black, I would have sold half
I didn't have to graduate from Lincoln High School to know that
but I can rap so **** school, I'm too cool to go back"

One of the illest lines I've ever heard in my life. That whole verse, talking about how hard it was to get signed because he was white. Then exchanging fans with Dr. Dre

But I forgot, only the hood buys Kanye West and Jay records :lol

We can conduct it now within this thread if you would like to.

Where did I say a rapper would "lack credibility if they were to receive it"??
dog, what the **** is a hip hop neighborhood?

If that isn't the most racist **** I've ever heard in my life
Racist........LOL.  You dudes are something else.  How is that statement racist??

I think there's a difference between arguing that Eminem is THE GOAT versus he belongs in the GOAT discussion. Safe to say he belongs in the discussion, however all the arguments dealing with who listens/buys, fans, career trajectory all factor into an argument for him not being the best ever.

My question is what the **** classifies you as a "true" hip hop fan??? Somebody please explain this to me...

How about someone who can have an intelligent conversation about the greatest hip hop artists of all time

My question is what the **** classifies you as a "true" hip hop fan??? Somebody please explain this to me...
One of the first things would be to have knowledge of the history of hip hop/rap and it's origins.  With that being said, when someone says that "Eminem made it okay for white people to listen to rap" we can automatically scratch that person and anyone that agrees with that person OFF the list as a "true hip hop fan".

There are so many race code words in here.

Hip hop neighborhoods... "true" hip hop fans...

And then to almost write-off an entire fanbase because they aren't deemed "true hip hop fans"?  Would we say the same about Raekwon's fanbase or ATCQ's fanbase?

Even if what you're saying isn't racist, it's certainly prejudice.
