Working out of any sort in the water is good for you because it takes a lot of stress off your joints... i'd imagine it's a great workout runningin water, but again, because of the bouyancy, you probably aren't working quite as much as you do running on pavement. just a guess though.

My best advice though in regards to swimming though would be breathing. Most cats I know just wail their arms like crazy and try to catch their breath.Best thing to do is the 3 stroke breathing techinque. Every 3 strokes you take your breath, and it helps also because in continuity when swimming becauseyou'll breathe at a different side after every 3 strokes. Breathing is key to swimming. That's why dudes get made tired easily because they don'ttime their breathes.

I hate running long distance. After 2 miles I get bored as hell and just stop. I started to enjoy running again by sprinting but then it got cold and now Ihave to wait atleast 1 more month before I can sprint again

I hear you DoubleJs... I've never been able to get myself into long distance running. It's like I've got a mental block that I just cannot run morethan a couple miles. I get bored. I get unmotivated, I never wanna do it...

I live around the corner from a basketball court and a football field, and I'll hop on the bike and go out there to bang out some sprints, play ball, whatever. Running in sort spurts doesn't bother me. I can ride for miles on my bike, and I absolutely love it. I can swim for awhile, and it doesn'tbother me at all... But trying to get myself excited about running 2, 3, 4 miles... Nah, it just ain't happening.

Black Michael Phelps, look out.

but I talked them into Karate classes

The only thing bad about swimming is that if you have bad form, which is common for the casual swimmer, you can hurt yourself.

Still, it's a great form of exercise, although I hate doing laps. I swim in the ocean and go out as far as I can so I know I have to swim back or drown.

alot of good tips in here - and alot of it is mentality when it comes to long distance running.

here's what works for me:
-running w/ music for shorter runs 2-3miles and running w/o music on longer runs 3+ miles (i get into deep thought during my long runs

)

-set out goals and build endurance for longer runs. I like to do a 4.5-5 mile run at least once a week. I do this by gradually increasing my running distanceeach day. So i'll start my week running short and easy distances and pushing myself toward my goal of the week.

-run with others or make-up a competition. some ppl like to run with others to push them, I however like create a fake competition against other ppl who may berunning the same trail or path that I'm running. They don't know that I might be trying to lap them or just keep pace if they're a good runner. Ijust do this to see where I am at w/ my cardio & conditioning.

What about jumping rope?

Im looking to cut up....and currently lifting 3-4 times a week....

how effective is jump roping? I've herd 15 mins jump-rope is the equivilant to running a mile? True?

How is the strain on your joints/back?

Guys,

I have been swimming and boxing for years now.

From what I am told, Swimming is not cardio. Craftsy21's quote touches on that.

Cardio technically is all "Aerobic" exercises. Running, biking etc.

Swimming technically is a resistence exercise. And "Anaerobic" exercise if you will, that apparently has more in common with weight training (via theresistence from the water) than it does with running and other forms of cardio.

See, fat burns in the presence of oxygen. When you run, you are taking in oxygen regularly.

When you swim, you take a breath and hold it, then take another. You are actually teaching your body to perform through a LACK of oxygen.

With that said, it is still a great form of exercise. It will definitely develop muscles and tone you up. But it is not "cardio" and will not causeyou to drop weight as quickly as HIIT/Interval training (which is why I do boxing, 3 min round, break, 3 min round).

In terms of cardio, one additional thing I do, in my building, when I can't get to the gym is run stairs. That @$%% will murder you. After a certainelevation, all you will be able to think about is the fact that you can barely breathe.

I also do it indoors, where there is less oxygen. So you gas quick. But you fight through.

skips kicks,

Jumping rope is a GREAT form of cardio. But it is stressful on the joints/back. It is a big part of Boxing, and I have always loved it. But I have some backproblems, so I am constantly told not to do it anymore. But I don't really listen.

Its the truth, I asked the strength and conditioning coach at my cousins school. He said Mimicing the running action in water is an excellent form ofcardio. Im gonna try it this weekend.

Double J's, what I found that works for me is I listen to slow songs when I am doing any sort of distance running. It helps me zone out and reflect onother things than what I am actually doing. May be worth a try???

Put some porn on ya ipod and run.....

It will definitely take your mind off how boring your run is....

Gotta get one w/ a moaner/screamer on there...

You might end up bending over to tie your shoe multiple times though....

If anyone tells u swimming long distances isnt Cardio they are NUTS. Maybe u guys are talkin about doing one or two laps, if so ok fine, but if we talkingoin all out for 15 - 20 laps , Im not buying that as not being an effective cardio aerobic work out.
Ive had coaches who get paid $$$$$$ who told me/tell me it is.

I aint talkin bout floating and coasting and casuual arm and leg movement, Im talkin bout SWIMMING.
If a person does 25 "go hard" laps u best believe they have just put in some serious cardio work.
the accelerated Heart Rate you sustain during those laps is exactly what u need for an Aerobic Work out.

Next time any of yall are at a pool, I ask yall to hop in and go all out for 10-15 laps ( #*#% even 5 Laps ) and tell me your heart wasnt pumpin at double thenormal rate the entire time .
