In theory, a sound rep system is less about creating an "incentive" for pro-social behavior than it is about content discovery.

In other words, think "thumbs up" in Pandora more so than"Like" on Facebook.  If you're in a 200 page thread about a pair of shoes, the posts with the highest ratings should be those that contain content of actual value rather than "
eek.gif
 cpped x2."

The larger a forum gets, the harder it is to catch up on a thread that's been going on for a few days and has accumulated hundreds of replies.  It's helpful, in that situation, to filter out the noise.

I'd prefer to believe that people will help each other out because it's intrinsically rewarding, not because they're going for the "NikeTalk high score."  However, even IF someone is doing something positive for a remarkably stupid reason, can't we still appreciate the benefit they provide?

I'm less concerned about the annoying "if you liked this, then thank me" posts than I am with using the reputation system to incentivize NEGATIVE behavior - such as insults - or childish behavior, like posting pictures of buxom models in every single thread, as though you're decorating your middle school locker.

It is possible for us to "audit" someone's reputation score.  With a couple of clicks, we can easily wipe out any points associated with a particular post - or erase someone's score entirely if necessary.  Begging for rep points, then, is like posting garbage to reach the 300 post mark for buy/sell access.  Ultimately, it's just a huge waste of your own time.

It's ALSO possible for us to remove someone's ability to award reputation points to begin with.  Certainly, people who "max out" in attempt to distribute points among their friends will be the first on the chopping block there, as would anybody who grants a big "thumbs up" to the posting of pornography or insults.

Eventually, what we'll likely do is structure the system such that ONLY those ABOVE a certain reputation level have the ability to rate other users' content.  In other words, you have to prove yourself to BE a positive contributor in order to recognize and reward this quality in others.  Obviously we couldn't START with that system in place on day 1, or our staff would have to rate every single post until we could elevate the first "generation" of rating-eligible users.  It's faster just to let everyone get a taste of the process to start, see how things play out, and then adjust the system accordingly.  This way, we can more easily determine what the "baseline level" should be for users to begin rating others and we'll have an idea of what people are naturally inclined to rate positively.

On some communities, getting "thanked" is rare, but each point is considered meaningful.  That's probably what we'll need to move toward.

As I've said elsewhere,
I seem to be in the minority among forum people, because I like the idea of negative rep points to keep people accountable.  I like the idea of encouraging people to be mindful of their "batting average."  In other words, users have, in the past, been far too eager to swing for a home run in every single post.  If there's no consequence for striking out, why not, right?  Go for the lulz.

What I think we want is for users to hit singles.  And the most reliable way - by far - to post something other users will appreciate is to be helpful, supportive, and informative.

THAT is what I want people to award rep points for.
If the top rated content isn't content WORTH featuring, the system is useless.  To be of value, the system needs to highlight the best content on our community.

We'll continue to work toward configuring the system so that it's as useful for our fellow members as possible, but ultimately a rating system is only as helpful as the people issuing the ratings.  If you guys give out points for foolish reasons, it's going to be nothing more than a childish popularity game.  If you give out points for QUALITY posts, then it's going to encourage constructive behavior and make it easier to find worthwhile content.

I can have my preference, but, at the end of the day, the system will only do what the community, collectively, uses it to do.  I hope we use it wisely.

Just went on a crazy liking spree in this thread

Actually just realized that there's a liking limit, and I reached mines :smh:

This belongs in the thread about nothing post. There's a lot of ish that gets on my nerves about this site but I don't make a whole thread about it.

Can we get a thumbs down feature though

i think that would be used way more than thumbs up cause naturally there are way too many haters on here, and this would be even more frustrating and cause more controversy than just having the thumbs up option.

with that being said im for it as well

people complaining about a feature that they have a right to use or not use? no one is ever happy with anything on NT these days..

also with the thumbs up its anonymous so why let it get to you? i've thumbs up'ed many posts that i find interesting, informational, or just plain funny, sorry for being so positive :smokin

You know it's ridiculous when you can get a thumbs up by putting up a for sale thread. Getting a thumbs up for posting something helpful/informative is one thing but asking for the thumbs up for doing so??

I would honestly like to see a neg button implemented. I think it would bring about a needed balance to the system. I dont think "The people who dont have a lot of positive reps are the ones who aren't really contributing" is enough. A neg button might just show people who you shouldnt take serious at all, and might just balance the people who are "being over repped"( I dont think thats even possible, but I've seen that complaint before)

Plus the NT Negged gifs would be hilarious. It should at the very least be tired out to see if people like it, just like the thumbs up was put in. Cant have Ying without Yang

Problem is that people would troll constantly. Like someone would get 20 thumbs downs for posting "lol" or something completely harmless. I can see that happening. Also, people would be afraid to speak their minds on stuff in fear of being thumbs downed. I think the system is just fine the way it is.

Everyone needs to just settle down.

this.

NTers  and their massive sensitivity are the reason Kleenex sales are through the roof and the the thumbs-down button would be abused

This is not rant worthy. It really shouldnt be that hard to ignore if its bothers you. Ive never given anyone kudos and ill probably never give anyone a thumbs up. Whether its there or not though, I dont care.

For all those who say its not worth a thread then why is it y'all take the time to comment? If your mantra is pay it no attention, stop contradicting yourselves.
