Black Culture Discussion Thread

Latasha Harlins, who was gunned down at a liquor store over a bottle of orange juice in 1991, would have turned 50 today.

We have to stop that cookout stuff. That is one of the things about us that I absolutely HATE man.

You do GET IT. You’re just in denial. It’s about money. It’s about dudes being phony and easily swayed by money.

Look how many black people HATE Jay-Z for his quote on quote “arrogance”… but support Trump.

Look how many of your people subscribe to the “invited to the cookout” trope. Got to stop being in denial about your people.

The same WACK 100 and hundreds of gang members who sit around on No Jumper. The same Game who didn’t want to pick a side with Kendrick.

Dudes beef with opposing neighbors, will check dudes about colors or gang politics… but get around them white dudes and give them a pass

why? what does the saying mean or actually amount to really that is different than any other ‘culture’ functionally? if someone of a different culture can commit themselves to ‘fitting in’ to another culture it usually allows that person some level of access…perhaps are you thinking other cultures have a higher barrier of/to entry??

I hate it because It's usually done/said for superficial reasons.

How someone acts/talks/dance/sings, etc and not for them putting in work and committing to breaking down the system.

Nobody used it for Rachel Dolezal (who actually attempted to put work in) but folks are quick to use it for got damn Jeff Hardy because he can dance and knows a few RB songs.

It's absolutely STUPID and insulting.

very interesting examples, ultimately very different contexts…one is super informal the other systemic; tho it maybe sometimes the case that the former potentially leads to the latter. nonetheless, do you think if dolezal were honest about being white it would have changed her reception? or do you think if she maybe would not even have been allowed the ability/access if not for her masquerading as black?/

I mean you can't run around doing charity Black Face and expect folks not to have an issue with it.

If she would have just Shawn King'ed it and did the work from that world, nobody would have batted an eye. They would have just viewed her as another freedom fighting white liberal.

I guess my overall issue with the phrase is they already have enough cookouts to go to, no need to invite them to ours.

It just comes off as another form of us being pressed to publicly acknowledge how much we love them.

😵‍💫 forgot all about man like shawn king…but to my other question, wasn’t he also saying he was black?

i don’t see the saying as being pressed, openness is an aspect of cultures, some are just more ‘accepting’ than others…you say ‘them’ like it’s exclusive to anyone but the saying ‘invited to the cookout’ extends to most anyone who shows some affinity to the culture in sometimes only a singular regard

Not sure if King said he was black, I just thought he was a white man that was trying to fight the good fight.

White people run this planet. I don't see the point in saying, "Even though you are allowed to be everywhere else, you can come into this space that is supposed to be for us."

It's just POINTLESS to me. Even though it's being used in a figurative manner it still says alot that some of us feel the need to even utter words like that.

I dont think I've ever heard someone say "invited to the cookout" out loud.

Dave Chappelle's Race Draft was another form of it.

There are plenty of examples out there on YouTube.

(Unless you are saying you haven't heard anyone OFFLINE say it)

So cosplaying as a black person doesn't even register to you as long as they "attempt to put on work"?

:lol :{

I never heard anyone saying it offline.

I think it's really just people(or bots) just parroting what other people say to sound/look cool. Its just a colloquial way of saying, "This seems like a cool white person..", aint nobody actually 'adopting', if you will, anyone. In other words, you're taking it too seriously.

Since we loving the African/Black diaspora now am I allowed back in here? Some weirdo told me I shouldnt come in here since I wasnt born in America. I created a whole thread too lolololol

I like what Speed is doing.

Kinda wild people think "Africans" don't speak good English and some other things stood out. Education system is ****** and propaganda really works.
I understand the criticisms of speed and agree with them to an extent as well, but I agree...I like what this young man is doing overall.

What criticism of Speed? hes been pretty cool kid for a while, hes not like a Kai and DEFINATELY not as horrible as a Adin Ross.

Hes got some questionable moments. Funny enough that video on the last page touches on them (the moments, not necessarily on Speed).

A lot of those moments is how he allows his fans to interact with him, so it's a bit beyond his control, but he's got stuff that was fully in his control where he looked like a damn fool. But its not a lot. And he was a kid. And its definitely not the same stuff as Kai.
