Black Culture Discussion Thread

come on dude, why ignore the context?

She’s a right wing darling, they’ve gone full “blood and soil”, so that kind of language will raise eyebrows.
Because its silly bro. You yourself are reaching for straws to piss yourself. The ad said Sydney Sweeney has good jeans….it never said Sydney Sweeney has BETTER JEANS THAN YOU. The ladder is being inferred by insecure people. If a girl says SHE has good genes and another girl turns that into THEY don’t have good genes, thats a self image problem. It is absolutely possible for two totally different looking people to have good genes. If her saying that made anyone feel any type of way, thats a sign its time for some therapy.

Tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if a right winger disingenuously started all this just rustle jimmies and dumb mfers falling right on in. Every time someone says they’re offended, it’s not a social injustice. Sometimes people just be on BS and sometimes they look like us.

Fake outrage. Express was running a similar campaign a year ago, but no complaints if its a fat chick in the ad

“Blue genes” “blue blood” implies superiority. I didn’t make that up; it’s how language works. You can choose to ignore it if you want.

“my jeans are blue” sounded very suspect.

“Blue blood” was a term used by European nobility to indicate that their lineage was untainted (aka they didn’t have Princess Diana/Meagan Markle types in their family).

There was also a Dunkin Donuts ad with some dude talking about genetics.

It’s a weird word to use when promoting products that have little to do with biology, especially within the current climate.
Blue jeans, fam? How is it a weird word to use when the typical term is blue jeans?

I ain't even quote you about that, but your last sentence was like huh?

I quoted to ask about the royals. My understanding was the pure blood line was actually implying them being inbred...not just that they didnt race mix.

Granted, I did no research as the topic does not interest me in the slightest. But was that not true?

Never heard of Sydney Sweeney.

Never stepped foot in American Eagle.

Did find this Lizzo post accurate, though:

Black women giving Doja Cat that work is something to see.

I don't see a problem with the commercial at all.

Who cares what them folks got going on over there?

If white folks want to sell their white folks' jeans to other white folks, then how is that any of black folks' business?

I didn't hear white folks say a word about FUBU

It’s about the double entendre: jeans/genes.

That’s why I said, if you ignore the cultural context around Sweeney, none of the eyebrow raising makes sense. But when you factor in her popularity, the messaging about passing down jeans/genes, and when you consider the symbolism of “blue genes,” you kinda ask yourself questions.

You gotta remember that a lot of those mall brands (AE, Abercrombie) tried to maintain a very particular aesthetic decades ago in order to appeal to the suburban crowd, and they got in trouble for policies that were racially exclusive.

This whole thing could be a dumb PR oversight, but there’s history there…

The whole symbolism is less shocking than the speed with which a lot of those companies went from inclusivity to featuring white folks pushing that genetics talk. 6 months in and they got the robes and hoods dry cleaned and ready to go

It is in a roundabout way.

Beliefs about genetics in those times blended the observable with the supernatural. If absolute monarchs were direct descendants of god (as, for example, the French believed), it made sense to think having children with the peasantry would corrupt the bloodline, so inbreeding was the surest way to maintain purity. From a practical/realistic standpoint, it was also a way to limit the number of people who could make claims to the throne (power was inherited).

Like clockwork, blame black men.

They can't help themselves. It's almost like they have their comments ready to fire off in a word document on their desktop.

She didn't need help and when she became in a vulnerable state, they jumped in to make sure she was good.

She aint need no damn help. She whoops his ***. Hell, they came to help him. :lol Be proud you handled yourself. She did that.

See this goes to show there is a group of women that don't want to be strong and/or independent because "movement". Other that a MAGA who do they think wants to drag type of person around? Think about it for a second, the internet talk you out of your independence. What the hell??

I'm sure the bears were on the way.

The first guy there literally saw her fighting, walked over like he was going to do something, then turned around & ran away...but he wasn't black, so that doesn't fit the narrative.

I thought she was the bouncer the way she worked that clown.

She handled him and bopped off like it was nothing.

Had homie grabbing her hair like his life depended on it

Wait. Forgot we are in 2025.

Gonna hold off on further commentary until "her" pronouns are confirmed.

Good back and forth about the Sweeney/AE situation. I agree with both of them; I wasn't mad about it but I understand why someone would be bothered by it. But I also didn't naturally see the ad in the wild, only when I was told to watch it because of the controversy.
