Black Culture Discussion Thread

The mask def ain’t have much to do with it in that situation, cops pull up in that neighborhood in a black vs white argument you know who side they taking…Yo coulda been rocking a suit and and it woulda ended the same way , we all know what time it is with this kinda stuff

. Let me ask you this. If you saw a white man in an upper class black neighborhood, in an Amazon uniform and a truck with an Klan mask on, you're not going to be concerned?

 Legit laughing @ the visual of this

I was a courier once, and I wore a "sheisty" on chilly days. Thats the intended purpose.

And just like that gentleman, if someone had an issue with my appearance (which sometimes they did with or without a facemask). I would politely tell them they could pick up their pkgs at the station or call customer service to request a white or asian driver and see what happens 🤷‍♂️

Then I would mark that particular address and never go there again. Did that to a rude white guy once, and after weeks of him not getting any packages on his doorstep he saw me on my route and humbly apologized for his behavior.

I'm not sure if that guy went back n forth with the couple. But the one mistake I did hear him admit to was leaving his vehicle open/unlocked. that woman shouldn't have been able to just grab her packages. And I'm sure that escalated things even further.

But I wasn't taking off nothing for anyone. My company issued us facemasks and other items to keep us warm. So, if I'm dressed in compliance with my company's policy that's all that matters.

Dudes must only work in corporate. Or never had a job where you had to actually be outside.

"Sheisty's" have existed long before Pooh Sheisty even came out. And long before the pandemic.

I worked security overnight while in college and it was normal. Never was an issue. Now all of a sudden, they're threatening even while doing your job.

But you know. #Respectibilities

Along the same lines.

This happened to me once, even though I WASN'T in my own neighborhood. Me and my boy went fishing in Deale, MD and I guess we didn't look like we belonged. Residents called the police on us; thankfully it didn't amount to anything more than they just asking us to leave. (It was an area that was for residents only, so we were in the wrong.)

But I doubt anyone white would have had the police called on them.

So on one hand you are acknowledging the time is different from when you were in college yet you are saying people are wrong for saying we should adjust since the perception of the ski mask is different now?

I don't change my actions according to racists perceptions. You're free to do as you please.

Every single Black Person in America does at one point or another.

But You can tell yourself you don't to feel better about yourself.

I get it.

It’s sad stuff like this will never change…And once again you can be wearing whatever, doing your job or just minding your business, but as long as you got the skin color they feel entitled to question/mess with you if they want :{

how would you know if you had (or not)? some might say things are set such that you already do

i can't assert that this is universally true, but it is probably generally true...noting that, most all (maybe especially melanated) fully functioning folk will be aware of the perception by others of their actions, whether they choose to move differently is individual in nature & influenced by the circumstance(s)

If things are already set the way they are then I'm not changing anything. I'm simply just navigating how I choose to do so.

IF eye wore a sheisty freely and preferred to do so, I'm not going to change that habit because racists look down on it now. Eye dont operate like that.

I guess I should also include I don't wear sheistys as a fashion statement because it looks goofy to me personally.

Are y'all really defending wearing an item called a "sheisty" at work :lol I suppose if you are a criminal it's appropriate.

He doing yard work?

Gotcha. I dont share that pov but that's peace. Neither one of us can prove it one way or the other

Are you comparing a klan mask to a shiesty? I've never seen the klan masked used in situations other than to be a terrorist. Conversly, I've seen shiesties used for real reasons.

To answer you question, i am gonna be concerned. The 2 pieces of clothing do NOT hold the same weight. Why couldn't the white man just wear a shiesty in your example?
It doesn't hold the same weight because you're looking at as a black man. Your view isn't the only view. Just like a white person in suburbia don't know folks just casually rock ski masks at work. All they know/think is people rob people in those mask. You can't tell me theres not at least a small part of you that doesn't think the phrase, "casually rocking a ski mask at work" doesn't sound crazy. Imagine someone sitting at their desk with a shiesty talking about its cold in here(It DO be Antarctica in the office). I dont think this is the north, he's also wearing short sleeves so I doubt it even THAT cold. I was always taught don't put yourself in a position where something like this COULD happen. No your surroundings. Especially in the south. Especially now. Again, the neighborhood and the police were wrong, but homie didn't do himself any favors.

Idk if yall put it together but I'm not down with regular dudes rocking shiesty trend. You don't have to do everything you saw on a screen.

Yea this is ridiculous.

Once again…….Black people please learn that it is okay to call the cops. In this case if what he is saying is true and she went in the van UNAUTHORIZED and started grabbing packages then she’s in the wrong. He should have called the cops off that alone.

I dont rock shiesties either. Not my thing. I think they look stupid. Even when I see the purpose they serve, I'm thinking that **** looks weird.

Comparing a shiesty to a klan mask is wild, though. That's not a disconnect from being a product of white suburbia. One surves an actual purpose to protect a person from harsh weather conditions. The other had served no other purpose than to spread hate and terror.

However, it does speak to the hurdles that we face in reality. It's ******** to even entertain, yet here we are. Don't get me wrong, i absolutely move in ways that I feel are necessary to present myself in the wrong light. And even argue that not doing it in certain situations is a fool's errand. But shiesty to klan mask? Cant do it. Put the white Amazon driver in a MAGA hat or something. Something that at least provides the potential for their actions to not be fueled by hate.

I don't mean this as an attack but we not talking about you tho. That's what gets people crossed up in these situations. They think everyone sees the world the same way they do. I used a klan mask because, on a surface level, its a threat. You not gonna think, "Well maybe they're just from Spain.."(look up Easter parade in Spain). Just like a white person isn't going to see a black man in a ski mask and think, "Well maybe his face is just cold..". Put it like this, If Im walking in a dark alley and I see a white man wearing a MAGA hat, I'm not automatically threatened. I know its POSSIBLE something might go down, but the odds are slim. If I see ANYONE walking in a dark alley with a shiesty, I'm mentally preparing for the a situation. Also, what "harsh weather conditions" is one wearing short sleeves?

EDIT: This whole situation is the outcome of a bunch of people living in separate bubbles colliding. White folks not know fool *** boys rock ski mask to be cool(lets be for real, thats what was happening here) and he didn't know folks didn't know that. Thats why its important to have diversity in one's life.

It's not a dark alley fam. Like, I get what you're saying but this is the reality...

A man in an Amazon uniform with an Amazon truck was DROPPING OFF packages in a shiesty. There's enough context clues here for a logical person to see there is no danger at this present time. Change the scenario in anyway, even just slightly, and I get it...concern could be warranted.

Not to ignore your point about this being my pov and everyone not thinking the same. You're 100 percent correct. And I'll be one of the folks that will call out someone for putting themselves in a bad position. This ain't it for me, though.
