Black Culture Discussion Thread

Hundreds of Black women and men gathered at the US Capitol to serve notice to the Republicans who are attacking her, and to the Democrats who are not defending her, that they all #StandWithIlhan.

People who reacted that way to what he said are overly negative and just engage in social media *******. Look at something like this. People just say **** to cause a stir.

Everything Jay said was truthful and I'm certain he understands that poor folk will be able to act upon what he was saying. However despite the numbers, all black people aren't poor. Also you need this kind of information from a person with Jay's stature because of his influence. Would they rather him talk about some everyday irrelevant ****? These are the same people who will talk **** about him and say he doesn't do anything for black folks. Damned if you do, damned if you dont. There's things to criticize Jay on, this freestyle wasn't one of them.

And nah we don't need to dial that back. Why are we gonna stop preaching the importance of ownership when we already own so little. That makes no sense.

i can see both sides, it isn't that black folks are poor (tho many black households may be making good income black household wealth is still far behind) but many aren't really in a position to act on that directive given by jay (and also using the language of gentrification implies a negative)...still the message may get people cognizant of the goal, which may get some to act & support in the ways they can.

also in terms of entrepreneurship & ownership, it's cool if it is in the context of really wanting to create value for people but often it is put in the context of strictly making money or not wanting to be making money/taking orders for someone else; basically the dame dash kind of school of business theory...and it is surprising how many folk are on that type of time, even in their own 9 to 5 reality. there may some percentage of the populace who really can't operate in the context of a routine or under the auspices of being somebody's 'employee,' but i'm not sure that should be the requisite path to entrepreneurship just like a degree/school isn't the only way to earn a good living...

Is there even evidence to state how impactful the talented tenth doctrine was?

They left a legacy of light skinned blacks as gatekeepers to the scraps of the dominant society.

I think the evidence is everywhere.
Modern day black frats and sororities.
Colorism in black music videos.
A Barrack Obama or Rosa Parks promoted over a darker counter part.

We celebrate blacks that rise to level of gatekeeper/boss/field over seer.

Shouldn't be a gate at all.

Tiger doesn’t think of himself as black. Most mix people identify as what the mother is, unless they’ve dealt with huge instances of racism from Whites. The Rock and Tiger are prime examples of that.

Many will say they “transcend” race though in the eyes of pop culture.

Real reason why they won’t outlaw guns in this country
I believe because of the fear
They have that us black folks
Will rise up once guns are gone

Virgil Abloh Criticized for Off-White™'s Lack of Employee Diversity

As Fashionista notes, Virgil Abloh is once again in hot water. After defending his Michael Jackson designs for Louis Vuitton, the designer has again stirred up controversy, this time for a series of Instagram Stories taken at an Off-White™ event in Milan.

Abloh’s Instagram posts showed various members of Off-White™‘s Italian design team. Though Abloh was celebrating the talent of his staff — describing the art directors as a “crazy crazy talented crew of kids” — social media users were quick to point out the lack of employee diversity at Off-White™. Despite a bevy of shots showing a room packed with people, critics immediately singled out the lack of black staff members.

Widespread denunciation is rather uncommon for the Off-White™ CEO, as Abloh’s work at Louis Vuitton has received accolades for its inclusive influences and progressive campaign imagery. Though the designer has faced dismissive outcries before, flak for lacking diversity is unusual for Abloh. The disparagement has even spread to Off-White™’s Instagram, with users commenting on unrelated posts calling out the racially homogenous staff.

A rep for Off-White™’s PR declined to officially comment, asserting that Abloh’s Stories showed a mere fraction of the 136 design team members. Check out the images that Abloh took via the Tweets and Twitter reactions below.

Meh. What's more problematic is the pricing of his ****. We know how it is the higher up you go. Twitter tryna kill everybody for anything.

Black people still looking for acceptance from non black people is still the funniest thing in the world to me. A while ago I would be sad like "omg, why wont they include us", now Im like "lol, efff em, we have our own stuff to celebrate"

When I see things like "first black ballet dancer to perform in France", I dont even bat an eyelash.

WE HAVE AFRICA and VERY BLACK THINGS AND SPACES

We have to stop expecting people to make certain changes either instantaneously or as fast as we have. We've had it ingrained in us to hold certain things or people or accomplishments to be more important or the highest standard since before most of us were born, so it's not logical to think we all will wake up one day and change it all.

Nah mad Jaden makers out there and the kids be claiming they're black

I don't have an issue with his pricing, don't bother me at all. Definitely disappointed in the diversity tho

"Cancel Culture" is mob mentality, folks gotta stop tryna impose their personal morals onto everybody else.
Agreed top to bottom.

I also don't think the disappointment here is inline with wanting to be included at their table. A black man was in a position of power and influence and hired not 1 single additonal black person. That's not asking white people to include us, IMO. That's just showing Virgil his **** up.

Now maybe Nike didn't give him any hiring power, but that's a hard one for me to believe.

That's what I'm confused about, I'm sure Virgil knows the struggle. Can't believe he dropped the ball like this
