Black Culture Discussion Thread

Stop trying to group yourself with this generation. No one identifies with you which is why your questions go unanswered. Your ego most likely is gonna suggest people aren't giving you the answers because you're too smart for this convo, which is the furthest thing from the truth.

There's some good dialogue and positive ideas being suggested in here.

For the sake of not grasping what's being communicated in the thread, please stop disrupting the flow and looking for someone to validate your self hatred random outbursts.

Well...as a black kid from the hood, who was forced with that Africa talk down his throat, I can tell you, we identify more with Jay-z than we do some random king in Africa. I can tell you, I drew more pride from my Grandmother struggling through school while raising six kids (two of whom weren't hers). That is where we ought to draw all our mentality from. I'm over Africa, I've learned about as much as I need, always open to learning more but it's not a priority. Dre does more for the kids in Compton than some king, a king that ain't got no J's. Go out in the hood, read them one of those Africa passages, and then read them some lyrics from Outkast, "we were once kings" or "get up get out and get something" which you think has more of an effect? I can dig learning about Africa, but attempting to draw everything we are from them is disrespectful to all those who actually made us, from the Soujourner Truths to the P. Diddy's. These were people of action, you ain't catch Tubman sitting around "we were kings" she was on her "***** come on, we getting the **** up outta here" steeze.

Honestly, I'm not seeing the point of all this Africa talk, they ain't us, they don't share the same morals, they don't share the same history, over half of us have european heritiage, but none of ya'll are talking that "these light skin brothers need to learn about their Irish heritage"

Ya'll are creating this racial identity crisis. Me, and every kid from my block, know exactly who we are, it's you smart brothas that struggle with identity. Personally, outside of all the education I have, I'm a hustla, I have a friend with a college degree, he's a gangsta, I have other friend who are absolutely  comfortable in their own skin, I think thats something ya'll need to search for within yourselves, but while ya'll are looking, can ya'll actually help the kids in Chicago?

I cannot pick out one thing over the others but I can say I am floored at this whole response. :eek

"The law of free will" tells me to let this one go :lol

I absolutely acknowledge my ancestors, including my mother, my grandmother, my father, etc. I know who I am and I am very comfortable in my skin. I am a person of African decent living in America. I am a decedent of people who created civilization and who went on to do great things. I am also a decedent of enslaved Africans and a part of a culture that can be self destructive. I embrace it all... the good and the bad. From the Nubian kings and Jay-Z to the Sudanese cattle farmer.

I'm talking about a bigger scope. You yourself said you studied African history, so obviously there is some benefit from it. So now you ready to act and by all means do what you need to do to help your community. I'm all about getting together with those who are willing to make some changes. BUT I will not sever my ties to my African heritage.

And obviously the average guy on the block doesn't know who he is, otherwise he'd be studying science, building the community, and treating his women like queens.

The problem I see with migrating to Africa is they aren't in a good position themselves. They are overwhelmed with many diseases, they aren't reaping the benefits of their own land, other countries are, and there's already a disdain amongst them towards black americans.

If we were to go over there, what's to say we wouldn't have to deal with racism?

If black Americans could band together and build a reservation like the Native Americans have, I think that would be a good start.

What if that's not who he is? That's your ego saying 'he doesn't know who he is' he knows who he is perfectly fine.

When I first asked the question (like years ago) it was a legit question, but after years of no one being able to answer, I've decided it was because you have no answer. Dance around is what always happens.

Why don't done of you celebrate your white heritage then? I mean, if your black in America, especially light skinned, then you are part European, so where's the brautwurst and corned beef? Y'all want to reach back and celebrate it all.

It's so shallow to me.

I don't agree with everything dude says, but his heart is in the right place. What y'all think?

Did you ever answer when I asked you what Made you Join a White Frat and historically did your White Frat allow blacks?

Oh I did, reread the post. I joined cuz my best friend joined, period. He asked, I signed up. Friendship. >>>> race.

And historically, I'm sure they had issues, but, for the last few decades there haven't been any in the time I was there.

I probably missed it. I assume its a business org or something if the process was just "signing up"

I actually think this one takes the cake! There cannot be much more to comment on after this remark. :eek

No, true fraternity, 1st is to sign up. We had a house, 140+ members. Never FELT any racism, was it there? Idk. But I
Can say I never felt it, and this was in Manhattan, Ks.

My mom/grandmother fought for civil rights, went to every million man march, worked at an office for Obama in 08. Grew up in the hood, drug dealers and fiends in my household. Military parents so seen racism all over, bio dad from Bama, frequent visits. Niece half Chinese. Bussed as a kid (most don't know what that is), almost equal mix high school D1 undergrad, 1 of 3 black males at my lawschool. Worked at bgc in manhattan (mostly blacks an po white kids). I have a pretty solid handle on race relations, reasonably versed in African history and the Afrocentric movement...so much of it is groupthink and shallow IMO , I understand the need for pride, but instead if looking, literally thousands of years ago, why not draw pride from the one who raised you?

Wait...are do to not understand what happened during Slavery? These are facts that most light skinned, and even a lot of dark skinned, black folk are part white, I happen to know exactly who, and where from (spend a lot of time on family history) yet, I don't really celebrate it because it's semi foolish to me.

kids a lost soul lol, as if every light skin person on the Continent of Africa identifies as European. Dudes do not understand Blacks have the ability to produce different skin tones without being directly Mixed from 1-2 generations.

Not Africa you dense....America! I've said America at least a thousand times in this thread....got damn, maybe I am to smart for y'all...like y'all can't read?

I concur and it's very sad that in 2014 so many people do not understand basic colors and the mechanisms behind them :{

It's really all so simple if we just stop and think! Like "can I take a white base and make black?" Hell no and you never will but people do not stop and think.

A jet Black african family can produce a chalk white albino once again but the reverse cannot happen.

Learn DNA, chromosomes, haplogroups, dominant, recessive genes, etc before you decide "oh well they are inferior because they are darker than me." :{

For example, Black and white makes yellow but then you have folks with yellow hues (asians) running around here being racists of Blacks :{

It has to stop man especially when we all share like 99% same DNA. Then again, it does take an ignorant person to be racists though, huh?

oh, so only Light Skin people in America are mixed with European but light skin people everywhere else are pure Africans? lololol

Bruh Its cool we under stand "you don't see color" and you don't want to be black.

What have I said that was false? Point them out please...happens everytime, I make very valid points, mud gets slung...but...when your alone, away from the twilight of the Internet, you'll think about what I said and realize

A) that I'm promoting the Negro as it's own race, independent if Africa (if y'all know as much about the slave trade as y'all claim y'all realize it was the loser who were captured and sold into slavery...ie those who lost wars or couldn't escape...from other blacks...but that page in y'all history books is stuck together) and

B) you agree with a lot more than you're
letting yourself admit because of language.

Wat? I never said that. Please quote. Y'all make stuff up...haha I said 'if your light skin, and apt of dark skin, blacks in America have European blood, never commented on any other country.

you classify yourself as a Negro?

? Even if you assume every black person in America is part European due to slavery, why would any of them reach back and celebrate that heritage if it was purely negative literally forced upon them? My great grandmother was an evil racist Italian woman, am I gonna celebrate my Italian roots now?

Swear, to claim to be smart, y'all exclude a lot of stuff. I've commented on my feeling on the term 'black' 'negro' and 'African American' me, Martin and Brother El Shabazz all are Negroes. If you care to learn the history of The term 'African American' I can tell you, but the short of it, it's a linguistic Kwanzaa.

Well, if you're going to reach back to celebrate your history, celebrate it all. I mean, personally I choose to start my history w/ the first American born slave, Africans were selling their brothers into slavery...nah I'm good off that. I'm sure there is a lot to celebrate about your grandmother, but 2014 has taught us only the bad stuff matters...that's bs. Human experience is far to complex to hate someone from one aspect if their life.

The only Race is the Human Race, and Malcolm would slap the taste out your mouth if you ever called him a Negro.

lol lotta Italians hate blacks due to self hatred of many/most of them having black in them due to the Moors.
