Social media changed it man.
Back in the era you're talking about, albums had to be finished 2, 3 months in advance so that the label could send it out to publications and other outlets / curators for reviews and ****, to create momentum and buzz.
As social media grew, the incentive for doing that has dropped significantly. It's basically non existent.
And now, as more people stream music, the incentive for pressing and releasing physical copies drops even more to the point where now, the album comes out first on streaming platforms, then hits retailers a week or so later.
