Bangkok Girl

Jordan Clark's tragic documentary provides a glimpse into Thailand's notorious and booming sex tourism industry through the experiences of a 19-year-old bar girl named Pla. Working in the bars from the age of thirteen, Pla has managed to avoid selling her body a remarkable revelation given her surroundings but her refusal to take part in this all-too-common profession for young Thai women cannot last. The introduction of falangs, or foreigners, to Thailand has forever changed the city, the economy, the Thai people's lives and desires. A daring and unabashed look at a popular Western predilection through the eyes of one girl, this film challenges the accepted worldwide practice of sex tourism. A newly mastered DVD of Bangkok Girl is now available. The main feature has subtitles in English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Also included: extended version with 8min of additional footage, trailer, deleted interviews and montages. Produced by High Banks Entertainment Ltd. and CBC Newsworld

I've heard that the idea behind "Hostel" came from Thailand, where rich men can go to a secluded area, pay off someone, and get achance to shoot someone in the head to feel the rush.

Where you can buy this at BTW?

I've been here for 2 months and talked to several bar girls here and their soul seems dead, just dead. I can't really explain it cuz it's one ofthose things where you gotta speak the language too. Crazy how they don't regulate the sex tourism laws here but if you're caught with a dub of weed, you're going to jail regardless of how much you bribe the cops and the cops here are 100x more corrupt in America

Why did the song Uptown Girl start playing in my head, just substituting Uptown for Bangkok when I read the title?

ya, i remember talking to a girl when i was traveling to thailand a few year back ....all she wanted to do was go to school and get an education, but her parents were sick and too old to work ...so she had to become a bar girl to support the family ...u can see it on there face...alot of them are ashameof it, but had no choices ...sex sells...especially in thailand ...

Man...one of my coworkers goes to Thailand for this very thing. He loves it out there....but of course, he can't bag any girl here in the states.

I have thai in me, from both my mother and father.
Haven't got around to seeing this, but I probably will now.

Anyone seen the documentary about prostitution in the red-light district?
eek.gif
It's insane.

I'm "obtaining" it now. Documentaries are interesting.. Any more suggestions? I remember seeing a trailer about an advertising businessdocumentary. What was the name of it again?

I've seen this documentary a few times on CBC. Very interesting, even though I already knew about Bangkok's sex trade.

A good watch.

For better or worse, it's no different in Thailand than what has quietly become one of the more successful black markets in the world. Sex tourism isprevalent in my family's native of Panama; you go to the 'right' spots as an American, or really any tourist with a few dollars to spend, andyou'll find some girls willing to do whatever they have to for a dollar.

What makes this all the more sad is that as you go from North America down the hemisphere, you notice that our dollars actually get bigger, as opposed toshrinking when they transfer into Euros overseas. Compound the laissez faire attitude with this cheap, yet profitable business, and you have an Americanmale's sometimes perverted, wet dream.

Am I the only one who is thinking that girl could have just been playing him to get by for a couple days? I mean, how do we know she didnt take part inanything more than pouring drinks?

Playing the innocent role in that corrupt environment is probably a money maker.
