Most of what people know as chinese food in North America is actually cantonese food or what cantonese people made for white people that they thought they would like.

For any Chinese NTers/NTers that have been to China, I'm going to visit my friend in Taiwannext month, but it's a really short trip (4 days). I'd like to use one of those days to take a quick trip to Shanghai; is it worth a $200 one day round trip? I figured that way I can visit 2 countries in a short trip. I've heard that Shanghai is similar to Hong Kong (have already been there several times). I also don't really see much cultural things to see in Shanghai compared to Beijing, but I wanted to go to Shanghai over Beijing because a girl I smashed in HK last year is from there and invited me 
I'm also worried about the pollution, as I'm assuming pollution is worse in China during the winter due to all the coal burning for AC. I just don't want to waste $200 and not be able to do anything new other than take pictures of nice looking buildings, which I will already be doing in Taipei.

Unless yambs are guaranteed no one day trip is worth $200
if you already been to hk have you bern to macau? Have you been to seoul? You also need a china visa too have you factored that into your costs?
The one advantage is if you have someone to show you around it could be fun

Have been to Macau and Seoul multiple times. I forgot to add that I don't usually get much time off from work (I have vacation time but usually can't take a lot of it at once due to my company going through major changes at the moment), so I don't know when my next opportunity to visit China will be. That is why I considered that $200 flight to China in the first place. This Taiwan trip is only possible for me due to Thanksgiving holiday time
Completely forgot about the Chinese visa. I'm too used to traveling around Asia without one or a free one. Looks like its an additional $140

I forgot what city it was but I was watching this newstory where people in China download an air quality app and use it to see how bad the air is that day and if they want to be out in it. That kind of pollution sucks to live in. I know they wear those surgical masks to cover their faces, i'd want a gas mask or something similar.

Yeah, I definitely don't want to be in China during that time. I heard Spring is the best season to go due to low pollution, but I'm an accountant, so traveling any time during January-April is basically career suicide. And I am NOT down to go during the summer either; I hate traveling in Asia at that time due to the humidity. So basically there's no way for me to go unless I find time in September

Thanks! Taipei has been on my list for a while; I just didn't prioritize going there because I grew up with and around so many Taiwanese people here in the Bay that I felt like I wasn't missing anything by not going

Yes. My Taiwanese friend is from there, but he'll be out of town for work until the weekend, so on Wednesday and Thursday I'm staying at a hostel. Flying back Sunday night pretty much right after I get over jetlag I usually fight through jetlag on these short trips by walking around constantly/drinking all the time to confuse my body

Somewhat agree, although I don't think obedient upbringing and the submissive portrayal we(asian males) are seen as should be synonymous.
You can still be respectful and still be an independent non "stereotypical" asian dude.
The line's are just blurred to a lot of kids because they were brought up and immersed in that culture for so long and it ends up being hard to differentiate between their familial lives and social lives.
It extends beyond just Asian males as well. I know many females that tend to avoid conflict or are submissive because they just don't want to deal with it and they attribute it to the fact that their upbringing taught them to be like that. But to american media, if the female is submissive, it's sexy and not uncool so it goes unnoticed

A lot of this is due to lack of representation in the mainstream media, much less positions of power. I've learned this the hard way myself.

I mean, you can say this about any race though.
The problem is that these sort of stereotypes are consistently portrayed in the media when it comes to Asian and Asian-American men. So whether or not a stereotype applies to someone, people begin to think like this subconsciously.
If you are unaware of what "orientalism" is, read up on it. Very fascinating stuff.
I mean folks from Ancient Greek were depicting Asians as backwards people, speaking in dog barks and having backwards feet.

It's mostly the media's fault. There are a lot of non geek Asian dudes throughout the world who are also smart and successful. @#%@, I'm one of them (half) My mom was strict as @#%@ when I was growing up in a stereotypical Asian parent type of way, but pretty much all of my mischief was forgiven (after the well deserved beatings, of course ) as long as I did well in school and treated my parents properly.
