Just got back from my lessons with Randy Ernst at Thousand Oaks Golf Course in GRapids MI and if you are starting or have a nasty swing that feels awful go getlessons. I had 2 lessons with my irons in the spring it took 10 strokes off my game. I didn't even attempt to hit a wood because my slice was so bad withit. So I was playing 4 iron off the tee. Went this morning to get my 3rd lesson almost 7 months later and he has done wonders with my woods in an hour. Just alittle switch of my left hand grip and simple thoughts and he had me smashing the ball down the pipe. Need to get new shafts on my woods because I was playingregular and he said I swing too hard and the whip causes some problems. Used his Titleist 909 driver and 3 wood and they were money. Felt so smooth. Going togo try and exchange at a local shop for my 907d1 and 906f4. See what they can do in getting me the 909's. I was always leery of lessons because I thoughtmy swing was so out of wack but it was just some minors things and he has me hitting the ball so much better now.

Nice. I have a feeling I'm going to be taking some lessons within the next 6 months or so. I still hold my clubs like a baseball bat and I'm prettysure I swing it like one, too.

Just got a Bazooka 3 wood and a #2 Adams A1 Hybrid in the mail today. 11.50 for the hybrid, just to check it out, and only 40 for the 3 wood. Score.

Yeah, do some research and see who is highly recommended. The guy I go to, Randy Ernst, is about as laid back as you can get. Simple thoughts, alwaysencouraging and loves the game. He always tries to hit my ball after I hit it. Dude cracks me up. He threw me outdoors in 40 degree weather with just a shortsleeve shirt on (he's in a damn coat) and was just looking at me laughing not letting me get my coat. This is only the third time I have met him and he iscool as hell. Thats why I feel the majority of the things are working because of the easiness he instills in me. I can honestly see 5-8 more strokes coming offmy game with his help.

The biggest thing I've learned in my swing how its all related and grip is by far the most important for me.

I call it the blister test.

If I finish a round with no blisters on my hand, then typically my score is a lot better.

I posted earlier that I'm just getting into golf. In the past 2 weeks or so, I've been able to get a set of decent irons for real cheap locally on thelist and have been playing like crazy. I've been to a 9 hole par 3 two weeks in a row and have shot 49 and 46 respectively. I even scored my first birdieever which got me pretty excited to say the least. I've been making pretty good progress at the range hitting/chipping/ and putting so I'm lookingforward to this Sunday when� I go out again... hopefully to get my score sub 40 this time. I know I can do it.

It's pretty inspiring to hear about all the success with private lessons not only from this forum but thesandtrap(dot)com(slash)forum. I just wish I couldafford them cause I think I'm at the perfect spot in my game to benefit the most from golf lessons. until then, it's driving range and par 9'suntil I get better.

I was recommended this book by Ben Hogan, and its definitely the standard for new/beginning golfers.

they were REALLY easy to hit. im pretty anxious to start playing again. last time i played i think i shot an 88 but that was 2 years ago

I hurt my back pretty bad two Mondays ago (to the point I missed some work because I was so immobile). I rushed out to play last Saturday at Blue Rock Westand had the worst day of golf ever, including my very first time playing on an actual course. On top of that, I broke out my #2 hybrid and my new 3 woodwithout testing them out at the range. I had no flexibility in my back and I kept topping the ball.

It was all bad.

I've been itching to go ever since Saturday to get over the bad day I had. Maybe this weekend, but I have a few responsibilities that may keep me from thecourse this weekend.

I was thinking about hitting Pine Meadows today by myself, but I don't want to bother anybody to watch my kids.

This weekend is a possibility, though. I need a range session more than anything right now. I need to figure out what these new clubs can do.

Get the kids some clubs and make it a family event.

I haven't played since right around my wedding and honeymoon (august/sept) so I'll definitely be at the range prior.

Plus I need to fire up my smuggled cuban.

My son has no interest in my new found hobby, which is fine for me. He's doing his own thing with Muay Thai and wrestling.

I don't have the patience anyway, and he hates getting instruction from me.

Thing I like about Buchanan is the fact that it's so convenient to hit up the range with a small bucket, then just go out and play.

Just got back from my best day of golf to date.

My local executive course, par 30, I shot a 32.

5 greens in regulation, 1 sand save to within 3 inches of the hole (saved par), 1 tee shot to within 3 inches of the hole (birdied it), only one 3 putt, andonly 2 mis hits with my 60 degree wedge that put the ball in the sand trap. I'm so close to shooting scratch golf for the first time in my life, I justneed to be a little more consistent.

Is your ball flight pretty consistent, like the first two shots you had in that video? It looks like a slight draw, if you can consistently hit that shot, thenyou should be in business.

All of my iron shots have a slight fade to them (right handed). I am consistent enough with this that I know to aim just slightly left of the pin, and the ballflight ends up dead on.

I wouldn't worry too much about fixing the little intricacies of your swing, I would work on hitting the same swing consistently. If you can hit the ballconsistently, that is what's most important. You can play predictable and safe golf.

What clubs do you have in your bag? How much time have you been spending on your short game?

I have a 9.5 degree driver, a 16 degree 3 wood, 5-9 irons, a bunch of wedges: 48 degree (standard bounce), 50 degree, 52 degree, 54 degree (standard bounce),56 degree (high bounce), 60 degree (low bounce); and my putter. (14 club limit)

My shots are pretty consistent now. It's been about 2 weeks since that video, and I've made pretty solid progress on my swing. Ican spank 7 out of 10 balls with about 6 or so dead straight with a bit of draw, just like you noticed. Makes sense since I was taught to swing from 7 to 1 onmy downswing. I can hit my 4 iron confidently and get about 200 yards or so (not really sure on the exact distance) but it's not as accurate as my shortirons. Hitting anything from a 7i down is just an afterthought now… I just do it. If I miss-hit, then I take a practice swing and make my adjustment and itsfixed.

So far, my bag only has a set of Tommy Armour Silver Scott irons (0i-pw), a busted putter, and a titleist 60 degree lob wegdge. I also usea mismatched sand wedge and a titlist burner 3 wood that I bought for 5 bucks but I'm not able to hit it yet.

My short game is now my focus. I spend hours on the chipping greens at my local range hitting everything from bump and runs off the fringeto 30 yard pitches with my wedge and can make pretty good contact with it now. This alone should bring my score down a few strokes since I mi**** a handful ofchips last time at the course. I hit a 42 on my 9 hole, par 3 course last week, and am looking to bring it sub 40 this week.

I'm going to the range (again) tonight for a session and should have some new video's up by tonight. It'll be interesting tosee the difference in my swing from 2 weeks ago… I know I fire my hips a lot better now than I did then.

My entire bag is mismatched, I just mixed it up today some more.

When I first started playing golf it was at a little 9 hole par 3 that you only needed 3 clubs to play, so I got a 5,7 and putter. I slowly expanded that intoa full mixed bag, and then that set was stolen in Sacramento. My parents replaced it with a full Wilson set, and I started buying random clubs for cheap that Iwould in the used club bins at golf shops.

I got a Callaway X-18 4 iron for $5, Taylormade R7 5 iron for $30 (one of my favorite clubs to hit), Ping i3 6 iron for $20, Mizuno MP-67 7 iron for $80 (oneof my favorite clubs to hit, kind of pricy though), generic Wilson 8 iron from original set, and I had an old Ping Eye 2 9-iron that my dad broke re-shaftedfor $30.

I got into wedges about a year ago, and picked up a 54 degree and 58 degree Cleveland CG10 from a Roger Dunn tent sale.

Fast forward to 2 months ago, I got really drunk out on the golf course and lost my 58 degree wedge (I use it for short lobs around the green). I went andreplaced it with a 60 degree Cleveland CG10 that I got for $15, got my first chip-in birdie with it, and then had a really bad streak where I couldn't hitsolid contact with it so I threw it and the shaft snapped in half. I replaced that lob wedge with a Spin Milled Vokey 60.04 for $40, and picked up some randomBeryllium Copper (not in production anymore) Ping Zing 2 wedge for $40. Today, I went to Roger Dunn again, and I saw two pristine CG 10 Black Pearl wedges, 56degree and 60 degree, for $30 a piece. These wedges had never, ever been played. They are now 4 model years old, so they are dated and Roger Dunn wanted to getrid of them.

I went out and played a par 72 course today, and birdied the first hole, but then doubled, tripled, doubled, par, and then a bunch of doubles after that. Ifinished with a 52 (+16) on the front nine, and I stopped keeping score after that. Rough day. And yesterday I shot a freakin 2 over on my little par 30course. Really inconsistent.

Played yesterday.

Did ok, couldn't put worth a damn, at all. Score would have been one of my better because I hit the fairways and greens on the par 3s. Unfortunately forme, 2-4 putting isn't a good look.

I need a new putter, don't care of its used or whatever but mine isn't doing me any good. I can't get a good feel for it.

I'm getting nice with my driver where I actually feel a lot more comfortable using it. I'm learning to hit a consistent fade, too.

I'm also going to look for a 3 wood since the local muni's near me don't really need a driver. Especially when I get better.

Mental error of the day? Short par 3 (150), wanted to use my 9. Accidentally used my 6. As my friends noticed the ball sailing over the hole, like, "Damnyou really hit the hell out of that one"....look down and see the line under the 6...oops
