All Things Sports Media Thread!!

This is an interesting take. I do agree the NBA has a problem with three-point shooting and they need to figure out a way to fix it but I'm not going to overreact to opening night with the Celtics shooting 60 threes. I think the NFL did a good job last year by implementing the games played limit needed to make all-NBA.

The NFL had a similar problem about 20 years ago with defensive backs being overly physical with receivers. After the 2003 AFC championship game between the colts and the Patriots the NFL put greater emphasis on the 5-yard illegal contact rule, giving receivers greater freedom of movement (and thus improving the TV product).

Dame Lillard called it WWE (at the 8:50 min mark). I’ve been sorta feeling this way lately. When he said “it’s entertainment”….coming from him, it’s stark.

I like the adjustment to physicality they’ve made to the league tho, and league minimum game requirement. Was talking about this earlier ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Dame comparing some of the modern NBA to WWE is how I’ve been feeling

I will say, I really appreciated the physicality last night, and through the preseason. It seems like after the backlash of the ASG last year, and after the positive feedback from the Olympics officiating, the league has seemingly made a commitment to allowing more physicality and giving the defender the benefit of the doubt.

At least for now…

I too don't like watching a bunch of threes in my NBA watching either but at the same time the high scores keep fans engaged/entertained.

Does anyone remember those Knicks Heat scores in the mid to late 90s? That wasn't always great defense we were watching.

Most fans aren't going to watch a game with at score of 57 - 59 going into the 4th quarter.

Not when we have a bazillion other tv/internet/video game options.

Whenever someone pipes up to me about nobody plays defense anymore and nobody can shoot, I tell them to watch a game from the 1980s. When they tell me there's too much scoring, I tell them to watch a 2005 Finals game. Lemme know how much "better" the NBA was. We're literally in the most talented era of the NBA, and it's not even close. Also, turns out it's really, really hard to play defense for four quarters when you have to pick up guards at 35 feet out and defend the perimeter against four shooters.

I always point to the 1997-98 Sonics as the team that was way ahead of its time. They didn't even have a true center that played any meaningful minutes. They had Detlef, Sam Perkins, Dale Ellis, Hersey Hawkins, etc. just post up around the arc. Gary Payton and Vin Baker did their thing, but literally every other player just launched threes. They won 62 games doing that.

Speaking of teams of the past that 2001 bucks team with ray gp tim Thomas and big dog pre dates the small ball lineup we typically see today.

It still boggles my mind that that team lost to Iverson and the sixers that year.

My Uber driver last week was from Milwaukee and swears they would have beat the Lakers in the finals that year.

If I remember correctly that team beat the Lakers both times that year. Don't know if they would have one but it would have been more competitive than the gentleman sweep of the sixers.

That Bucks team would not have beaten the Lakers, but that ECF was a travesty. The Bucks got robbed. The irony is that George Karl gets so much hate, except he was a good coach. He took the Sonics to a finals, he should have made the finals with the Bucks team, and took Denver to a WCF. How many coaches can claim they took three different franchises to conference finals? He never had the better team in the final matchups, but was always competitive.

Don't think this was posted or mentioned, but The Ringer really did make some good upgrades recently. Was hoping Zach Lowe would be part of it, but he could just be taking some time off. Selfishly, Jacoby going full time to The Ringer is great, as he and Simmons are hilarious together.
