There hasn't been an active thread on entrepreneurship in years so I  decided why not start one up. Feel free to share any idea's , business plans, articles ,video's, website's ,etc that you think would be useful to fellow entrepreneurs. I would love for this to be a place for entrepreneurs to collaborate and everyone to grow their business. When posting always try to add value , lets try to refrain from simply "That won't work" or " Ha, thats already being done" without facts and references to support what you are saying. I'm a sophomore in college and I'll start this thread off with  a little intro of what my business is.

I own a computer programming lessons company located in the East  Coast( as much as I'll reveal as far as location don't need more competition popping up in my area). I started when I turned 18 right after high school so this is my 2nd year owning .The first thing I did what decide what it was going to offer ,was it going to be language , grade school , high school, college tutoring, etc. I eventually decided on high school programming traditional subjects were WAY to saturated for my liking. My biggest thing when starting this business was I wanted something that has low startup costs and allowed me to have free time to do with I want. I've since accomplished both. A big thing wrong with most tutor businesses I seen was that they were unorganized and non proffesional , so the first thing I did was make a website and logo . Through networking I was able to find 4 college students who I would pay on commission . Next step was to get polo shirts made complete with logo , this goes along with being professional , I can't tell you how many parents have told stories of tutors showing up late with piercings, red bulls , and hollister shirts. For marketing my plan was to adults instead of high school kids , what most people were telling me to do, simply because like piano lessons this is the type of service I don't think a 9th or 10th grader will willingly seek out you have to explain the benefits of knowing how to code to an adult and wanting the best for their kid they will see the value and work with us. The biggest drivers of growth came from targeted fb ads , paying to place huge flyer at groups and meetups of moms , and referral programs (If wan't specifics leave a comment) . Now with employee's , uniform , website, marketing I needed to get locations set in place. I didn't want to be one of those tutors that is all over the place , sometimes here sometimes there , so I worked out deals with 4 locations where I payed them a percentage of hourly fee's I charge . The reason I did this rather then pay to rent is I started this with less then 300$ in the bank. Now last thing I needed was a way to collect money. I decided it would be best if they had the option to order from the website so i installed a cart that accepts all major cc's and paypal also while being able to accept cash or checks in person. I bought a software to manage employee's and clients. And in the past 3 months have hired a manager to handle basically all day to day operations. We've since explanded from 4 employees to 17 , and also instead of just offering one on one lessons locally we've released video lessons and 2 E-books. Expanding to virtual products has been by far the best thing we could have done. So far this month exactly 73% of our revenue has come from the 2 books. I don't want to say exact revenue #'s but I will say it's high 5 figures monthly and I plan on reaching atleast 6 figures a month in 2015! A small computer lessons business started at 18 has paid for college and allowed me 100% fully support myself and help out family and friends I couldn't ask for anything else.

Please share any stories , advice , or really anything helpful and of value.

Great work keep it up.

Your post was great for teaching without giving up too much info. Repped for you

Yeah , I hope people aren't reluctant to share their business in fear that someone will steal their idea , but even if you don't post about your company like I did there is still room to offer advice to others .

I wanna start up I guess a content company or something. Basically wanna create a website since I'm a writer to post articles up on it and eventually add some videos/podcasts. I'm not the most computer literate person though.

What topic?

Basically could start with sports since I'm a sports writer and I wanna do these random sports articles on athletes I find intriguing. Not a breakdown of games or anything (although that could be good for a podcast) but just like a stroll down memory lane and analysis of athletes. I also trade stocks so I wouldn't mind discussing the tribulations of trading, that days activity or whatever.

Obviously I could do a blog but blogs are meh.

My only problem with content website without a product to sell is the only real source of revenue is advertisement which isn't horrible but the only way your making any real money from advertisements is if you have a ton of traffic which to make worthwhile will probably have to be paid for.I'm big on low startup costs as well and time. It takes years for websites to consistently get 10k visitors. If you do decide to start look into doing affiliate marketing for some related sports product's

I'm planning on starting my own practice (Physical Therapy). Right now, I'm just jotting down some ideas. Strictly cash-based, no insurance taken. I specialize in Orthopaedics/Sports Medicine, so I want to get into local high schools and have my pre-physical screen as part of the physical process to prevent injury. Knee injuries are an epidemic in high school athletes (4:1 for girls to boys). After the pre-physical screen, what ever I find I will offer my services to improve their deficits to improve performance. Strictly 1-on-1 care. Parents spend $$$$ on taking their kids to personal trainers in the off-season, but theyre limited on biomechanics, human performance, and injury prevention.

Considering the high HIV+ population in NYC, I want to be able to provide Physical Therapy and/or lifestyle modification/education program as well.

What I have learned is that you have to show people what you are worth and how your services/product are valuable. People will pay a little extra knowing something is high value.

Great idea and perfect target market in Manhattan.

Diff sector kinda but some kids on my middle school football team the parents put them in the program at chelsea peir(I cant think of the name) for speed and agility training. Spending lots of money just so they can have the best shot to lower their 40 time by a fraction.

Best of luck to you. I work in the Healthcare sector as well and trust me these park ave drs with self pay patients are making bank and only seeing 8-15 pts a day.

I know that program. While I was in school I use to see kids work with the trainers and I would just observe and make mental notes on what they were doing wrong and what I would do different, ect. Thanks for the feedback.

Great post. I don't have anything brewing, but a great book to read is the 4-Hour Workweek. It has lots of information there about starting a business and putting it on autopilot so that it runs with or without you, freeing up your time to do other things.

I want to start a business that allows educational materials and technology to be easily accessible and insanely affordable for low-income families that would not be able to afford these things otherwise.

Household income and academic achievement are roughly correlated. Part of the reason is because lower income families don't have the resources that middle-to-higher income families do.

I'll lose money at first.

Kahn Academy. Look it up on YouTube.

Lose money at first is a given. Most ventures don't break even until years on.

Great thread. I have a handful of ideas that I'm still testing with.

My advice to anyone and everyone is to associate yourself with like minded individuals and keep the negative energy out. I scared myself a while back because it's hard to run a business in Cali given all the unfriendly taxes and unfair workers compensation laws.

I have 4 guys that serve as my mentors. They work in various fields. All are self made multimillionaires. Ironically enough none of them graduated college. This is not to say college education is unimportant since I hold a couple of masters degrees myself.

It's hard to run a successful business. Failure rate is 80 percent for new business among the first five years.

I'd like to do something similar with study material for th stock market. So many products and services cost 500 bucks plus to learn that it often times deters people from getting the proper beginning needed to position themselves for a successful trading career. I know from experience it bothered me seeing the prices of some of these learning materials that I brushed them aside at first and it wound up costing me more money as a result since I tried to learn things on the fly. As I improve as a trader this is one of my goals to eventually give back the wisdom I acumulated for free or a small price that would be a donation to a charity. I mean if you're banking as a trader, you really have no reason to be charging a ton of money for resources. Yes, sometimes you need to pay others for those resources to be produced, but for the most part those resources are priced ridiculously.

I know about Kahn Academy, but I meant more along the lines of having physical materials available. Everything is so technology based now but I feel like we overlook traditional writing skills, and other things that would be good to learn with hands-on experience..especially early on in a child's life, IMO. I don't much about KA but isn't it just online?

My target market would be families of young kids Pre-K to 3rd grade.

So you want to do something like Kumon?

Yes, KA is online based. I found out about them back in 2011 or so through my IT professor in my MBA program. Khan is a genius. I forget where he graduated from, but it's a prestigious school. The purpose of KA is to bring world class education to anyone with access to the web.

I'm not knocking on you or anything. I wish everyone to reach their dreams and goals. I was just letting you know it exists, if you didn't already know.

Had no idea about Kumon, thanks. :lol
I figured something similar already existed, I just didn't know how it was organized.

Kumon is big, especially in poorer nations. Last time I went back home, those after school sessions were packed with little kids.

Remember that you don't have to invent a new product, figure out your angle and roll with it.
