2026 Track and Field Thread

He need to clarify which country, cause I highly doubt it was the US or Canada

Back in ‘06 only why you gettin any decent money US wise was under the table like cam and that was to go to auburn and that was 200 grand or whatever

But Olympics wise you’re better off succeeding with a smaller country vs the US and Canada

Like Bahamians who succeed will get land, sponsorship with local companies and then BS government board posts just to get and keep them paid

Joseph schooling is a great example in swimming, off of that gold medal he won he easily got over a mill in benefits plus got a sponsorship deal with Hugo boss and Speedo for the Asian region.. whereas Michael Phelps might be the only American swimmer who touches that level of benefits the more I think about it

Because swimming obviously isn’t track with the sponsorships and your medal benefits is a set standard from the country unlike smaller nations

But Jamaica might be that rare small nation that has legit expectations every Olympics in track.. unlike Singapore in swimming or even to a degree Bahamas in track.. cause even though we now Steven gardiner and Shaunae in track, our success was more sporadic and without the very very top sustained expected success

So everyone who has had success is extremely memorable (like I remember exactly where I was watching our girls when the 4 x 1 and then our men winning the 4 x 4).. while with Jamaica they got some of the GOATs on both men’s and women’s sides

But if you expecting millions to change citizenship gotta be oil money and middle eastern

For US Swimming Lochte and Ledecky have likely both seen multi millions as well although not on the Phelps tier.

But yea for Asafa, I'd guess it had to be Qatar, Bahrain or Azerbaijan if he's not capping

But that’s the thing, lochte and ledecky are two of the greatest swimmers ever

Lochte’s 200 IM world record is somehow still standing through Phelps AND now Marchand.. I don’t know how much money I would have put down that both Phelps 4 IM and 2 fly would be right after that 200 free and 200 back records for being untouchable and both are gone and that 2 IM still standing

I think all are doing well, also guys like dressel and Ryan Murphy.. but I don’t think any of them are clearing what schooling made and will make since I assume the state will make sure he continues to get sorted.. I know he got sponsorships with Hugo boss and Speedo to the Asian market

Think Schooling's payout from the government was a one off, he's reportedly working for a venture capital firm now while having a swim school on the side.

I’m just assuming.. I know what other countries usually do/have done

Like with the Bahamas, we’ll give those guys land and then they’ll get sponsorship deals with government owned corporations (think utility companies).. and then they’ll get deals with the ministry of tourism or ministry of sports/youth and then they’ll get put on government board appointments which pay like 1-2 grand per month just to keep getting them paid

But I know alex lim a former Malaysian swimmer, he went to my US high school and I know they do similar stuff for him.. he held high school record in the US, went to cal but I think his highest Olympic finish was in the semifinals.. but I know they make sure to do little things to take care of him

And then you have Hunter Armstrong facing potential retirement because he lost his main sponsor

I was so hoping she would get it!

What a courageous attempt, MUCH RESPECT!

I loved her speech at the end too, she handled it like a GOAT. Very inspiring to watch.

I'm happy for her that she still ended up with a PB. Might not be the ultimate goal that she was aiming for on this day, but as an athlete any time you make a PB, it's a special achievement, so you have to be proud of yourself and what you've just accomplished, never mind the other circumstances around your performance or the outcome of the race.

I hope she tries to go for it again eventually. I believe she can do it and I'll make sure not to miss it.

Yoo.. I missed this.. sorry man, my bad

Shh is a mess… looks like it’s going it up just like the pro swimming league they tried to start and I thought was doing well enough and then lost its sponsor(s) and supposedly people still ain’t been fully paid (ISL)

Meanwhile enhanced games got that weirdo cutting checks
