He need to clarify which country, cause I highly doubt it was the US or Canada
Back in ‘06 only why you gettin any decent money US wise was under the table like cam and that was to go to auburn and that was 200 grand or whatever
But Olympics wise you’re better off succeeding with a smaller country vs the US and Canada
Like Bahamians who succeed will get land, sponsorship with local companies and then BS government board posts just to get and keep them paid
Joseph schooling is a great example in swimming, off of that gold medal he won he easily got over a mill in benefits plus got a sponsorship deal with Hugo boss and Speedo for the Asian region.. whereas Michael Phelps might be the only American swimmer who touches that level of benefits the more I think about it
Because swimming obviously isn’t track with the sponsorships and your medal benefits is a set standard from the country unlike smaller nations
But Jamaica might be that rare small nation that has legit expectations every Olympics in track.. unlike Singapore in swimming or even to a degree Bahamas in track.. cause even though we now Steven gardiner and Shaunae in track, our success was more sporadic and without the very very top sustained expected success
So everyone who has had success is extremely memorable (like I remember exactly where I was watching our girls when the 4 x 1 and then our men winning the 4 x 4).. while with Jamaica they got some of the GOATs on both men’s and women’s sides
But if you expecting millions to change citizenship gotta be oil money and middle eastern
For US Swimming Lochte and Ledecky have likely both seen multi millions as well although not on the Phelps tier.
But yea for Asafa, I'd guess it had to be Qatar, Bahrain or Azerbaijan if he's not capping
Think Schooling's payout from the government was a one off, he's reportedly working for a venture capital firm now while having a swim school on the side.
IATT Not surprised after they cut the Philly meet from 3 days down to 2
