anyone heard anything new about the Thrasher Lunar Gatos its been nearly 2 months since those pics surfaced and still no new info
Nike Shirt
Anyone think this is being done to combat skateshops? Meaning, maybe nike sees places charging $150 plus on shoes and are tired of it? Maybe they are sick of seeing FSR released on ebay for huge markups? We all know there are shady shops around and being able to walk through the mall and scoop a pair sounds like easy way to eliminate all that...
Uncle BIP coming through with the truth as always, i remember when i was skating back in the day and nike sb had just started up and every single skater hated on them BUT at the time i always thought it was funny how much local shops pushed for them which really didnt make sense to me. Now looking back i understand exactly what why they did what they did. Very smart way to gain fan support amongst those who were skating, and they slowly began to build a brand within skateboarding.I also think nike going into chain stores will have too much of an effect on local/small shops because to be honest alot of skaters til this day will and always will resent nike sb within the skateboarding world... Just my opinionNot really. If that's what a shop has to do to get Nike it's money, then Nike will endorse them doing what they have to do.
Here's how I think about it - when you are really trying to break into a market, the first thing you need is credibility - respect from the core audience that will cement your brand as something people need to take seriously. Nike had real issues with this in the skateboarding world. Focusing on locals was a way to build credibility within the community, to say this is a niche product for you guys and in line with your ideals; we are separating this from our huge corporate enterprise. As popularity grows and credibility isn't an issue any more, your main concern isn't how to convince people who like skate shoes that they should buy Nike, but how to expand your market, simplify your distribution chain, and maximize profits. Phase two is always marketing and expansion when it comes to business. At one point, Nike needed these shops more than they needed Nike. Years later, the shops need Nike more than Nike needs them.
If you compare NSB to a start up of sorts, you see the same arc. You start by gaining acceptance among your peers - credibility in the trades. Once that's achieved, companies often revamp their procedures and identities. These are just the phases of a business, for better or worse for the customers.
at myself for sleeping on this thread

The same thing is happening with Nike Snowboarding now. At first everyone hated on Nike trying to get into the snowboarding market, worried about them pushing out the little companies. Lots of people still do hate on them for this very reason, but every year on the slopes you see more and more Nike gear.Uncle BIP coming through with the truth as always, i remember when i was skating back in the day and nike sb had just started up and every single skater hated on them BUT at the time i always thought it was funny how much local shops pushed for them which really didnt make sense to me.
