what's it to anyone how much somebody is getting paid. if an employer is willing to give them that type of deal, so be it as long as it's not affecting me directly.

Look at their ages though. Kershaw is only turning 26 this year. You're paying his top years and assuming that his 23-25 years are only just the beginning. No health problems, repeatable delivery/motion, extremely good control/command and there's really no precedent for this kinda deal for a pitcher this young or this good. He's worth more than he got.

You can't tell me he's worth 215 million because he can throw a white ball very fast and make people swing it with a wooden bat and miss.

I know this is sports and everything but just think about what I said. Can throw a white ball fast and make people with a wooden bat miss. Crazy.

I've always been partial towards the argument that these guys are in the top .0000001% of their profession. It's the same as being the best doctor, or the best lawyer or stock broker in the world, you're going to make outrageous amounts of money. You discount them because it's a game, but nobody else in the world is as good as Kershaw at what he does.

DMan: My thoughts precisely. Specifically, it was a lot of older dudes saying this stuff. I think we were talking about football, but it still applies. They would gruffly say how they don't watch pro sports anymore because athletes are overpaid and yada yada...I think it was just an excuse because they have no idea about sports to be honest.

I just strolled into MMP today. Ran into Luhnow in the cafe located by the team shop. It was so peaceful inside the stadium.

All of these teams are spending cause of tv money. If the FCC gets its way and ends blackouts on tv for sports, teams aren't gonna get as much money from local deals as they are now.

It's depressing seeing that deal Kershaw gets knowing that it isn't even possible for the Indians to ever make that kind of a deal

The deadline for Masahiro Tanaka to make a deal that would bring him the United States to pitch in 2014 is one week away, and while there's no reason to believe a decision is imminent, the Chicago Cubs may be gaining momentum towards possibly nabbing the highly-coveted free agent.

As ESPN.com's Buster Olney wrote in his Friday blog, "Executives have complimented Tanaka's agent, Casey Close, for keeping the process under wraps, but there are rumblings that at least one of the potential bidders is prepared to pay Tanaka like a Cy Young-caliber pitcher. Could that mean $150 million? $160 million?" And could that potential bidder be the Cubs?

Mark Gonzalez of the Chicago Tribune says that Cubs manager Rick Renteria met with Tanaka in Chicago last week, and was "upbeat" when talking about it. "Renteria said the Cubs' selling points were the deep reservoir of prospects that would arrive in the majors during the latter years of his multi-year contract if he signs with the Cubs," Gonzalez shares.

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark is at the owner's meetings in Arizona and tweeted that it was "amazing" how many owners in attendance there were "convinced Cubs are ready to blow away the field and sign Tanaka to a monster deal."

Oh no, the thing about Billy I think is that if he were given something like... 100M, which is becoming less of a huge number as time goes on, he'd probably be able to make the bigger, more obvious moves that almost guarantee a better team, like going for Tanaka. I think he'd like those simpler moves once in a while
