Question:
John Wall or Kyrie Irving to start a franchise right now?
Did Wall get this much flack on NT when he signed the max?
Wall...ALL day. Runs a team much better, actually plays defense, and has proven that the team can win when he's on the floor. I'm not just talking about last year. When he came back from injury in the 12/13 season, Wall had the team playing .500 ball.
When Wall got the max there were a ton of questions about whether or not he deserved it. I mean, you look around the league and there are players like Steph Curry who make less. At the time of the extension, Wall had A LOT to prove (he still does). However, it looks to be a good investment as both he and the Wizards are on the rise.
Kyrie is a different story, IMO. For as good as he is individually, he has yet to show that he can run a team or be a winner. He was treated w/ kid-gloves up until this year because of the way Lebron left. Kyrie was a media darling, got a **** load of endorsements, all-star berths, etc. He could do no wrong. Well, the grace period is over and he is now going to be EXPECTED to have this team well over .500 and in the playoffs year after year. Any scrutiny that Kyrie gets is warranted because he didn't face an ounce of criticism in his first two seasons as a pro. People were jaded and refused to acknowledge any of his warts.
Wall, on the other hand, was raked over the coals. He was in situation that no other PG in the league would have flourished in. There were immature teammates (Blatche, McGee, Young) as well as the whole Arenas/Crittendon fiasco to deal with. He was unfairly questioned as to why he wasn't winning with the cards he was dealt. Granted he was a #1 overall pick, but that was a lot to deal with in your first few years in the league. Oh, and not to mention the instability of the Wizards front office. He (Wall) had it worse than any other PG in the league. You can't tell me otherwise. Once the Wizards smartened up a bit and flushed out the turds, this is when you saw what Wall could do. We had flashes over the years, but his exploits were overshadowed by the moronic nature of the guys he was playing with.
