I've already asked this question but what happened to Joe D? Does he get too much credit for putting that championship roster together? Did he just get lucky? It just seems like everything fell apart so fast. Can Detroit fans enlighten me?
Departure of Flip Saunders?
Team chemistry destroyed with trade of one of the most popular players in Billups? Something the Pacers are learning now.....
Trying to force feed a subpar player like Rodney Stuckey over the superior fan favorite Allen Iverson, leading to a divided locker room and fan base?

Lots of possible reasons.

Joe Dumars did a fantastic job putting together the core that led to the 2004 championship. But over time, the core got older and more arrogant leading to on-court disappointments and off-court unrest. Then Dumars spent money recklessly (twice) and Bill Davidson passed away, which handcuffed him for a period of time.

Those things aren't even close to the impact of his free agent signings though.  Most GMs would get fired after clearing and completely wasting cap space one time, let alone twice.   He signed 4 legitimate Free-Agency busts to very big contracts.

Yeah, you guys are right in that Joe D made some garbage signings. I was simply pointing out the beginning of the end for the Pissed Ons. They treated the championship team like step kids. Trading Chauncey. Signing Ben Gordon which made NO sense plus it caused Rip to be unhappy. Signing Charlie V who I actually liked as a player but was overpaid, didn't fit and was always hurt. Let's not forget about a wasted overall #2 pick....

A lot has gone wrong since Flip left and Billups was traded. But that's where it all started IMO.

I understand the Ben Gordon signing. He was 20,3 and 3 the prior season and shot 40% from 3.

I just don't know what happened to him when he got to Detroit.

All the attention goes to the Gordon, Villanueva, Smith and Jennings signings (and rightfully so), but the Jerebko and Prince re-signings were awful too. At least he got out of the Prince contract.

Thank goodness he's struck gold through the draft with Monroe and Drummond.

Yeah...  But at the same time he was clearly buying high since Gordon was coming off his best season + that amazing Bulls v. Celtics series.  And Gordon had been a 6th man (a great one), it wasn't clear he could just switch into a starter's role and be the same.  So even at the time I think the contract was fairly risky.   I wouldn't have tried to build my team around Ben Gordon despite his production.

Not to mention the Stuckey contract.

But isn't Monroe 100% sure bet to walk?

S&T is a possibility, right? So if that's the case, the Pistons could at least have something in return rather than letting Monroe go for nothing.

I can't even blame Dumars that much for the Smith signing either. He got one of the most versatile forwards in the league while he was in his prime. Now it's just a matter of dealing Monroe for some perimeter help or trying to find a trade partner for Smith.

You are WAY too forgiving.

Josh Smith can be as versatile as he wants, he still has the worst shot selection at the forward position in the league and doesn't play to the best of his abilities.

Why people thought that would get better going from a playoff team to a lottery team, I don't know.

Josh Smith's game is so non descript though

. Must be that Hawks stench that can't wash off.

Joe D should have been terminated the min he passed over Melo, it's like because of that Pistons team he constructed he is legit against signing Stars

Right.  I mean if Josh Smith had gone to a contender with strong coaching (i.e. Spurs) then it would have been a GREAT signing, but going to a lottery team you had to know it would be a disaster.

He's restricted
