Vic Carucci
The Packers have a rising star in Aaron Rodgers, and their new 3-4 defense looks as if it will bring improvement.
Prediction: 10-6, first in NFC North
Steve Wyche
Transition to 3-4 won't prompt a step backward. Aaron Rodgers and depth make Packers team to beat in the division.
Prediction: 11-5, first in NFC North.
Pat Kirwan
Playing more zone will help a team that was predictable in man coverages. Rodgers is on the verge of being a top 10 quarterback. If the running game gets going, eight wins is too low.
Prediction: 8-8, third in NFC North
Bucky Brooks
The Packers fly under the radar to finish with the league's best record behind an explosive offense and a suffocating defense.
Prediction: 12-4, first in NFC North
Jason La Canfora
The Packers have made the move to a 3-4 scheme look easy this preseason. Love the QB, and the offensive line should rebound.
Prediction: 11-5, first in NFC North
20
Green Bay's defensive ranking in 2008. In an attempt to improve the unit's production, the Packers are switching to a 3-4 scheme under new coordinator Dom Capers. Through the first three preseason games, it has produced 12 turnovers.
"The decision was made in January. I made it with a clean, conscious mind. I like what I've seen so far. I've said it before, time and time again as I stood up here: I like the way Dom Capers has come in here. He's pulled the defensive staff together. The players have responded."
-- Mike McCarthy on his new defensive coordinator

Aaron Kampman
Kampman is making the biggest transition of his career as he moves from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker. He has 50.5 sacks in his seven-year career. However, the switch to linebacker will require him to drop into coverage on occasion, which may be a daunting task for a player who has always played with his hand in the dirt.
Greg Jennings
The unheralded star has quietly blossomed into an elite receiver during his three-year tenure in Green Bay. A long strider with deceptive speed and quickness, Jennings has terrorized opponents with his big-play ability. He led the league with eight receptions over 40 yards in 2008, while his 1,292 receiving yards ranked sixth. With Aaron Rodgers growing into a star, Jennings' ascension is sure to continue.
20
Backup plan?
Rodgers is better than starters for other teams above this spot, but his backups have no experience. If they had to rely on Matt Flynn or Brian Brohm for any long stretches during the season, the Packers would be lost.
Complete QB rankings >
Pass it on
Aaron Rodgers is coming off a breakout season. Not only does he have a strong arsenal of weapons around him, but nine of his 16 games come against teams that finished 15th or worse in pass defense.
Three pivotal games
Oct. 5 at Minnesota
No matter what players say about being calm when facing their former team, Brett Favre's emotions will be off the charts -- and so could his propensity for making some risky plays. Defensive tackles Pat and Kevin Williams could be serving the final game of their suspensions and that could open the door for the Packers.
Nov. 1 vs. Minnesota
The atmosphere is going to be charged as the Packers No. 4 jersey could be set ablaze in bonfires outside of Lambeau. Though Favre may go into the Hall of Fame as a Packer, he is perceived as Benedict Arnold for signing with the franchise's hated rival. This won't be how he wants to be remembered in Green Bay.
Dec. 20 at Pittsburgh
This is a tough game amid a possible playoff run. The Steelers tend to play some of their best football late in the season. While the Packers are transitioning to a 3-4 defense, Pittsburgh is the master of it. Unless Green Bay's offensive-tackle play gets better through the season, Rodgers could be feeling some serious heat.

Vic Carucci
Brett Favre didn't help make the Vikings better. In fact, with the suspected division his signing brings, it could hurt.
Prediction: 9-7, second in NFC North
Steve Wyche
If Brett Favre experiment works, Vikes might finally win a Super Bowl, but they have to get past Favre's old team first.
Prediction: 10-6, second in NFC North
Pat Kirwan
Brett Favre is not the player he once was, but he makes team better. Ground game is tremendous and run defense is exceptional.
Prediction: 11-5, first in NFC North
Bucky Brooks
After entering the season with high hopes, the Vikings stumble out of the blocks and fail to live up to the immense potential.
Prediction: 9-7, third in NFC North
Jason La Canfora
My gut tells me this Brett Favre experiment won't go quite as scripted.
Prediction: 9-7, tied for second in NFC North
414
The difference in career touchdown passes thrown by new starting quarterback Brett Favre (464) compared to the duo of Sage Rosenfels (30) and Tarvaris Jackson (20).
"I know in the long run I'll be judged on wins and losses. I am well aware of that."
-- Brett Favre

Brad Childress
Childress is feeling the heat after making the move to acquire Brett Favre near the end of training camp. While the addition is sensible on paper, it has the potential to wreck the chemistry of the locker room if the veteran struggles. With lofty expectations abound in Minnesota, Childress must hope his gamble pays off or risk losing his job with the Vikings.
E.J. Henderson
The seventh-year linebacker has been one of the Vikings' unsung heroes on their stellar defense. His return from injury makes their top-ranked rush defense impenetrable. Henderson is a ferocious headhunter with outstanding instincts who excels at blowing up runs between the tackles. He is an outstanding blitzer with the burst to explode through seams in protection and get to the quarterback.
7
Plenty behind No. 4
Brett Favre changes everything for the Vikings. Before he injured his arm last year, he was a top-rated quarterback. The Vikings will keep him on limited throws all season. Tarvaris Jackson has already led the team to the playoffs and Sage Rosenfels has won coming off the bench.
Complete QB rankings >
Favre from finished
At 39, Favre is clearly past his prime. But that doesn't mean he still can't help fantasy owners win a championship. With a great runner in Peterson behind him and some talented options in the pass attack, Favre still has some value as a No. 2 fantasy quarterback.
Three pivotal games
Sept. 13 at Cleveland
The season opener will feature Favre against his coach last season -- Eric Mangini -- and will either fire up the hype machine or play into doubters' projections. Favre's delay from offseason workouts and training camp could limit his effectiveness, but Peterson should make up for any rust.
Oct. 25 at Pittsburgh
This will follow a game against Baltimore and, once again, defensive pride will be at stake. This will be a physically taxing game, where turnovers could play a factor. This also might be the stretch where then-40-year-old Favre finds his mojo or starts to feel his age.
Nov. 1 at Green Bay
Favre's new teammates are going to have to insulate him from a lot of craziness all week, although many of them might not want to partake in his personal side show. The players didn't ask for this, but they're along for the ride and will have to make the most of it.

Vic Carucci
Jay Cutler gives the Bears a bigger passing arm. The running game is strong, although a lack of playmakers might be problematic.
Prediction: 8-8, third in NFC North
Steve Wyche
Dearth of receivers will be an issue only if the Bears play too frequently from behind. That could be the case in this division.
Prediction: 10-6, third in NFC North
Pat Kirwan
The run defense is a question while the health of the tackles and secondary is key to the pass defense improving. The offense will be better with Cutler but the receivers need to step up.
Prediction: 9-7, second in NFC North
Bucky Brooks
The defense regains its bite and leads the team back into the postseason. Although their late-season swoon costs the Bears a division crown, their record assures a playoff appearance.
Prediction: 10-6, second in NFC North.
Jason La Canfora
The Bears finally have a QB to go with a great young running back and emerging tight end. Defense is solid. If offensive line changes click, the Bears could be right with Green Bay for second place.
Prediction: 9-7, tied for second in NFC North
24
Years the Bears have gone without a Pro Bowl quarterback. Jay Cutler earned a trip to Hawaii last season with the Broncos.
"I think about what he can do to the teams we play against if we give him time, and I'm really excited. He can kick a lot of butt right there."
- Brian Urlacher on Jay Cutler

Lovie Smith
The Bears coach is under pressure after failing to make the playoffs in consecutive seasons following their Super Bowl XLI appearance. Smith's surprising decision to coordinate his own defense places more pressure on him to orchestrate a turnaround. With Cutler bound to boost a pedestrian offense, it is on Smith and the defense to guide the team back into the postseason.
Greg Olsen
The tight end is poised for a breakout season with Cutler under center. He finished second on the team in receptions last season and has the skills to become a Pro Bowl player. A gifted pass catcher with receiver's speed, Olsen excels at stretching the field on vertical throws. Cutler's penchant for throwing the long ball will lead to more explosive plays for Olsen. With points at a premium on offense, Olsen's continued development is essential.
16
All on Cutler
Acquiring a player like Cutler doesn't happen very often in the NFL. He has the arm strength to insure the weather will never be a factor. His backups don't have the experience to rank the team any higher than the middle of the pack.
Complete QB rankings >
On the rise
The Bears won't turn into the "Greatest Show on Turf," but the team will throw the ball more often with Cutler. That should mean big things from Olsen, who is the team's most reliable receiver. Look for him to become a strong No. 1 fantasy tight end.
Three pivotal games
Oct. 18 at Atlanta
The Bears, with Kyle Orton at quarterback, seemingly rallied to beat the Falcons only to have Matt Ryan stage his signature moment of 2008 in a last-second comeback victory. Chicago returns, only this time with Cutler at the helm. Two of the NFL's best young QBs will be on display.
Dec. 13 vs. Green Bay
This rivalry continues in what should be played in perfectly frigid conditions. We will know by now if the Bears' offensive line has settled in because whoever can run the ball best should win. Cutler also has a chance to have a much better December than he did last season in Denver.
Dec. 28 vs. Minnesota
If Brett Favre is still healthy and both teams play to preseason projections, this could be for a playoff berth. Favre and Cutler are similar gunslinger types and the hype will be huge. The Bears have to somehow figure out a way to slow down Adrian Peterson, which hasn't been the case the past few seasons.

Cleaning up 0-16 can't be done in a year. The Lions have some players with promise, but they're still bottom-feeders.
Prediction: 2-14, fourth in NFC North
Steve Wyche
A brutal schedule could be why the Lions wait to start Matthew Stafford, but they will be better.
Prediction: 5-11, fourth in NFC North
Pat Kirwan
If Daunte Culpepper plays the whole season they could win a few more games but Stafford needs to get valuable experience.
Prediction: 2-14, fourth in NFC North
Bucky Brooks
The Lions will end their embarrassing losing streak early in the season and get back on the road to respectability.
Prediction: 5-11, fourth in NFC North
Jason La Canfora
After an 0-16 season, anything constitutes progress. In time, Matthew Stafford should be great.
Prediction: 3-13, fourth in NFC North

Consecutive games the Lions have lost, dating to 2007. Last year, Detroit became the first team to go 0-16 in a season.
"I think it starts at the top. I think it starts with coach (Jim Schwartz) and he's doing a great job. Coach Schwartz is really coming in with a great new attitude, bringing in a lot of confidence."

Daunte Culpepper
With his career at a crossroads, this is likely Culpepper's last chance to be a starter. He was once regarded as one of the top quarterbacks before injuries stunted his development. Culpepper has shown flashes of good play during the preseason after reporting to camp in great shape. Given another chance to prove he can lead, he must play well to salvage his career.
Ernie Sims
The fourth-year linebacker is set for a big year in Gunther Cunningham's blitz-heavy scheme. Sims is one of the team's best athletes and the Lions' attack style system will allow him to utilize his speed and quickness. Sims has quietly been one of the league's best young talents, but he was stifled in the old read-and-react system.
31
Cloudy picture
It is hard to evaluate the Lions. Daunte Culpepper has enough to play like a quarterback ranked 20th, but the team will find a way to get Matthew Stafford on the field, and he is not ready to win games just yet.
Complete QB rankings >
Can do it all
Kevin Smith is one of the few featured backs left in the NFL, and playing under new coordinator Scott Linehan makes him a true breakout candidate this season. Look for him to post career numbers.
Three pivotal games
Oct. 18 at Green Bay
This concludes arguably one of the toughest six-game stretches to open the season in the league. Depending where the Lions are, this could also conclude Daunte Culpepper's run as Detroit's starting QB. After a bye, St. Louis comes to Detroit in what could be Matthew Stafford's debut.
Nov. 15 at Minnesota
Jim Schwartz's defense should finally be rounding into shape in the second half of the season. The Lions could give the Vikes more of a challenge than most expect, and Stafford could have the chance to steal the show.
Nov. 26 vs. Green Bay
This Thanksgiving Day game could be the last one of relevance for the season, although stranger things have happened. The Lions might actually be in contention and this is the fifth of their six NFC North games.

Green Bay's defensive ranking in 2008. In an attempt to improve the unit's production, the Packers are switching to a 3-4 scheme under new coordinator Dom Capers. Through the first three preseason games, it has produced 12 turnovers.
"The decision was made in January. I made it with a clean, conscious mind. I like what I've seen so far. I've said it before, time and time again as I stood up here: I like the way Dom Capers has come in here. He's pulled the defensive staff together. The players have responded."

Pass it on
Aaron Rodgers is coming off a breakout season.
