Even Jordan aint do it . People romanticize some of these two way wings, and what their role was defensively.

I vowed not to argue about Kobe anymore but let's just say all defensive teams are a bull**** way of judging defensive prowess and have been for awhile

Ya'll going from one extreme to the next.

Don't really need to romanticize it, those dudes were great defenders. We've seen it. Of course they didn't check one dude for the whole 48 mins, shut him down, hold him to 10 points.

We saw Kobe check AI for majority of games, Kobe and Tmac checked each other A LOT. The effort is really the difference. A lot of dudes today are scared to get embarrassed.

Yea they're "supposed to" but the vast majority dont. Rather spend that energy on the offensive side to carry the team or w.e.

The great defenders usually either have the IQ or it's a pride thing.

Durant and Kawhi always go heads up. Fox will guard 1-3.

defending “the man” in this era is harder to do because it’s less isolation

They played team defense. Kobe was fortunate enough to play with the most dominant offensive force in history, when he checked AI and locked in defensively. He still had a huge role offensively, but it wasn’t like it was in the 07-11 era, where he was a good team defender, but other better wings checked the other teams primary scoring option. Same with Jordan/pippen etc.

That is what ballinsam23 ballinsam23 originally said.

I’m talking about guys that can carry you offensively and also guard the opposing players best player. Where’s the Kobe Wade Bron etc. Surprised we haven’t had a 25 and under guard do that in years really.

I gotta see these Tatum defense numbers too.

Over the course of possessions, guys are going to switch and guard each other. It happens.

You wanna know somebody who was really ducking, and didn’t wanna get embarrassed.....You won’t like the answer 🐍 :hat

List not the worst I’ve seen posted here. There’s only 10 spots; someone’s gotta be left off.

They really need to stop that foolish talk of nba players being “2 way” they supposed to play offense and defense ...that ish only goes for NFL players keep that there!!!

I'm not sure but it has to be one of them new to basketball nerd sayings. That was never a thing until the last few years.

Now you care what the old heads think :lol

This is a good point. Still, in the playoffs the isolation picks up. A lot of these guys dont even fight the screen or go over the screen anymore. They let the switch happen.

switching blows up offenses but at the same time can exploit guys. Kind of no wrong way to look at it. It’s worked before and it hasn’t worked.

One on One defense always been overated . Team Defense >>>

Modern defenses just don't work like that anymore.
The rules have changed. The way the game is played has changed.
Individual defense is valuable but team defense matters more.

Then why switch everything? I can't remember the last time I saw someone fighting over a screen. Seems like coaching staffs have now instructed players to switch automatically.

Not to be a contrarian, but when has switching worked? Seems like most teams (specifically Lebron led) invite the switch to purposely get a mismatch and double down on isolation basketball. Or am I getting it wrong?

That's true the rules have changed and you have to adapt but team defense has always been most important. The bad boy pistons did what they as a team, the 90's Bulls, The 04 pistons, the early-mid 00's Spurs.

You still need individuals giving effort to be a great defensive team. How many great defensive teams are in the league now?

Doesn't matter if it's the whole game or not, you have got to have 1-2 guys who can lock in for a quarter or even just crucial possessions, not die on screens & get you a stop/throw players out of rhythm. There is nothing Overstated about that skill.

Every championship team over the past decade atleast has had 1-2 defenders on the team who could go a 5 minute stretch & disrupt ****. And the truth of the matter is a lot of these "stars" don't have the ability to do so, it isn't about fatigue or wanting too, they just don't have that skill.

I can't believe this. Players have been fighting through screens since the 40's. Defense is just at an all-time low, in terms of quality.
Haven't seen you post in a minute dude, hope all is well.

I couldn't disagree with this more though. Defense has gotten infinitely harder to play. The schemes on both offense and defense have gotten more complicated, there is less clearing out and watching one guy do everything, and the game is just so much faster and players have to cover so much more ground than ever.

Defense is evolving at like a 1.3 multiple... The offense is just at a 1.8 so it looks like defense is "easier"

offenses have evolved. it’s a pick and roll heavy league. You’re not getting a 1 read PNR with guys jumbled up on the side of the floor anymore. The best defender is going to get screened. That split second hit leads to open shots and those kill you in the playoffs.

It’s 2021.

It don't matter that Kobe had Shaq, he was still asked to drop 25-30 while setting up the offense.

This whole team defense thing is another new term. Of course you play team defense. Dudes switched a lot back then too.

With your favorite player being who he is on defense, I don't think you wanna go down that road. :lol
