When my screen blew out 2 years ago, I was still under the Dell warranty and the repairman replaced the screen in about 10 minutes. It was pretty simple, justa bunch of screws and connectors that you simply unplug and replug. Also, if you youtube videos like DatZNasty said, I'm sure you can...

I got DQ'd once.. but that was due to progress.. Honestly, like I told my housemate, if you're on dq/ap, take a quarter easy (FST10, NUT10, BIS10, Film Studies, etc.) to boost your GPA, better to waste aquarter than to get dismissed for at least a year.. Good luck on finals!

That price isn't a shock, I've seen these on clearance racks for ~$60.. As for the upper sole being "smokey", that's probably due to the yellowing effects of having an "icey" sole mixed with a whitebackground to them..
