Your Next Vacation Destination.....?

DR and panama in a week :nthat:
...Do i need to rent a car in DR?

Depends on what you’re trying to do or go...what you’re trying do and where?

They do have Uber and it’s cheap...

Dominicans drive crazy, runs red lights/stop signs, speed, cut you off, ride close to the car...motorist drives opposite direction in one direction road...

My experience in track racing helped but if you’re a nervous driver don’t.

Thinking about taking my shorty to Thailand.. any pros or con I need to know ? And how is the night life/chicks out there.. btw I’m black if it means anything

While doing my research its expensive there...

Yes, it’s quite expensive but there’s no added tax at purchase and there’s no tipping so that helps.

How long are you there? With a home base in Reykjavík, you’re going to be doing a lot of driving to take in the sights. I did this but when I go back, I’m going to switch hotels as I travel throughout the country.

A couple notes from my trip. Sorry for the long read:

Hotel: I stayed at 41 A townhouse hotel located on Laugavegur, the Main Street in downtown Reykjavík. It was a great stay and in walking distance to a lot of great restaurants/bars.

Car: Unless you’re off-roading, you’d be fine in a sedan. The terrain isn’t bad but the wind is a MONSTER. I’ve never experienced anything like the wind on the South Coast. That being said, be careful with opening your car doors in the wind. That damage is not covered by insurance.

Sights:
Golden circle -this includes, Geysir, and a couple waterfalls, along with the national park (sorry can’t recall names now). Not as nice as south coast but cool
South Coast - so beautiful but far and dangerous with strong winds. This is where you’ll see the Glacier (you can walk on it on your own or schedule a climb/tour), the black sand beaches, the promontory, a couple waterfalls. It was a great drive. If weather is bad you can stay in Vik. Also, if you have it in you to drive to the iceberg lagoon, you won’t be disappointed. It’s awesome. But the drive back to Reykjavík is like 4.5 hrs.
Geothermal Baths - blue lagoon is most popular. Good idea to go either from or to the airport since it’s in route from Keflavík. A lot of people trash it because it’s not technically geothermal, it’s overpriced, tourist trap, etc but it’s a cool experience. I actually went there and to another one out west called “Krauma”. I’d recommend that one as well. Less expensive, not crowded, modern, serves wine, and about 1.5hrs outside of Reykjavík. Don’t waste money on a robe.
West Iceland - another hot spring out this way by Krauma, a volcano crater (probably can’t hike up due to snow), smaller, more historic looking towns, waterfalls, etc

Restaurants/Bars -
Mat Bar - Small restaurant and bar, good drinks, and great small plates. Service was great and had drinks with the staff after they closed at a bar down the street. Good time.
Grill Market - the best meal I had there. Listed as one of the best restaurants in Reykjavik. Extensive menu. We did the Chef’s tasting menu. Loved the Whale, duck salad, and Lamb.
Street Hotdogs - different take on a hotdog. Made of lamb. There are a couple stands around. Get it fully dressed (crispy onions, raw onions, remoulade, apple ketchup).
Snaps - bustling restaurant, simple menu, good drinks, fun time.
Vedur - fun bar with great cocktails!
Public House - cheap all you can eat brunch, not traditional Icelandic food but good

Also, get some lobster or lamb soup from somewhere. It’s traditional and really good. I can’t remember where we went but it was not far from the Blue Lagoon. Right on the water.

I did no tours, since I had a car we drove everywhere on our own time. I enjoyed it but I do think some of the snow mobile/atv tours are fun activities if you have time.

I’m sure I’m missing some stuff but i’ll add them as I remember. Also, I’m a big fan of Rick Steves’ travel books. I’d encourage you to check it out.

Hope this helps some.

Trying fit a little 10 days in Mexico beginning of May.

Should I go around Tulum or Oaxaca?

My plan is do to 7 days there and then 3 days in Guadalajara to see a couple of friends.

I'd be backpacking. Not into the resort thing.

nothing planned for this year yet, but I'm going to Rome next April for my wedding

Tulum is supposedly amazing (I’ve known 4 couples who have gone in the last yr) but all these articles coming out saying it’s overrated now haha.

Back in India next wk for work for 2 days lmao.

torn between a cruise or a Caribbean area for easter week
anyone got any cruise recommendations ?

Punta Cana.
Really trying trying to get the in and outs of the city.
What spots to hit up. I know a lot of east coasters been

Punta Cana is tourist controlled... so it’s like everything is available for you. Closest town is 40 mins. Basically You’re isolated... :lol

Most other places will be 2-3 hours drives - Samana, Jarabacoa, Puerto Plata, Saona Island

The person who’s heading to Aruba, I’m sure you’re going to enjoy the beach/weather and discovering the island but to be honest there wasn’t one great place I remembered eating at. Passions on the Beach was cool as far as eating dinner in the beach at night but I don’t even remember the meal being that great. The beaches has some of the whitest sand and the water is amazing. This is coming from someone who’s from the Caribbean also, it was magnificent! Try to rent a car to go places and you should be good to try restaurants others recommend. The casinos was hitting too but they allow smoking.

just booked a family trip to PR...bringing the kids for their first time super hyped...and now the countdown begins
I really enjoyed PR, I forget the name but there was a beach I took a boat to from Carolina which was more secluded and it was super dope. Old San Juan was amazing to me as well, I love historical areas. Stayed at a old fashion/modern air bnb there.

Appreciate the words dude. I mean no disrespect by this, but I'm shocked you didn't like the food. Over the years I have heard nothing but GREAT things. People talking about "top meals I've heard had" vibes.
