The problem with Vanilla Mike is that he isn't interesting on his own. He needs Maria for people to even look his way.
Maria has a nice body but that's it.
This gimmick of being SO IN LOVE does not have a long shelf life. Clearly WWE only wanted Maria as evidenced by the last name being used.
So either they split up and she manages someone else or they just waddle in yhe bottom of the card.
They needed an NXT detour to connect with the fans and hone the gimmick first.
