Did anyone on those 80s Pistons teams have a first name that was Thomas? Maybe it was to avoid confusion because of that?

Not sure if this is the reason.

Or what about the possibility of Ray Allen and Allan Ray playing on the same team. The also had Tony Allen on the roster.

I am pretty sure he was the only one.

I've seen this and thought the same thing...I looked through rosters and couldn't find anything except that one guy who played 31 games that wasmentioned.

I still want to know the actual reason. And I'm surprised fab hasn't rocked the Jersey with the full name.

This man was pondering the question for over a decade.

I remember when certain player had nicknames on their jerseys. Pete Maravich has “Pistol”, Walt Bellamy had “Bells” on his....

There was a player named Jim Thomas in Pistons training camp that season (1986-87). He didn't make the squad, but I'm guessing they didn't have a lot of jerseys to go around back then, so Isiah may have made the full name decision in the preseason and was then forced to stick with it. Or maybe he liked it like that. As to why he didn't just go with I.Thomas - I've guessed that I.Thomas and J.Thomas would have still appeared too similar on the back of their jerseys. Granted, their different numbers would have been enough to tell them apart, but the first initials have always been a thing.
