I believe that there are some fundamental flaws in the American education system, and a huge flaw has been personified through this incident. Anybody that's attended a public school has learned at an early age that the education system is a game. So much emphasis goes into grade scores, and standardized test that people stop caring about what they know. Moreover, the concern shifts to what they can show.
I don't think it's fair to expect athletes to perform at a high academic level. Now I do believe everyone should be literate, but we aren't expecting these people to become brain surgeons or active members of the civil workforce. I know that if I had God given physical talent, but lacked the mental capacity to perform well in school, I would do anything in my ability to get where I needed to be. It's unfortunate, but the fact of the matter is that if it weren't for the huge demand that is professional sports, some of these people would be Wal-Mart greeters.
For those that are upset with Derrick Rose and those of his ilk, I hope that you feel the same way about the people who cheat their way through high school, college, and eventually become CEO's, Congressmen, and Presidents. Because these situations happen a lot more than a professional athlete cheating on a test. Not to mention, these people have the ability to directly affect your lives.
This is an excellent point.Originally Posted by goukiteg
We should care. For every DRose that makes a successful career in the NBA, there are countless faces that never make it to the L and never graduate from college because they didn't have the skill set to help them succeed.

yeah but integrity is just lame man...who needs thatOriginally Posted by Dunkaroos
It's called integrity.
Yeah very true but on the court, he usually makes pretty good decisions. It gets to me 'cuz I'm confused by the incongruence lol. Okay, his being stupid might be the reason why his court vision sucks. He simply makes plays thru great reaction I think. Anyways, I'm just talking non-sensehere. But dude is pretty dumb in interviews.Originally Posted by DEpast
You can listen to the dude talk in interviews and tell how dumb he is.
Doesn't surprise me at all he had a stand-in for the SAT.
unless hes a steelers fan he cant really talkOriginally Posted by lakersmets49ers

^^ come one man. Is he dumb on the court? Was he dumb when he was busting the Celtics' $@#%%? Some of you are missing the point that he is only a basketball player. Lets start judging these guys on what they do on their jobs. I don't give a damn if Rose can hold a conversation on the economy. I want him to know his offense and how to break down the defense.

Shoot, let's just keep expecting nothing out of the black man in the classroom because he's an athlete.Originally Posted by AntBanks81

OP, ARE YOU EFFIN SERIOUS? You're justifying and rationalizing with all these reasons, but end of the day, he was in the wrong. You all make it sound like it was
a) cheat on the SAT to go to college to he could jump to the pro's.
b) die in a gutter
c) sell drugs or rob banks forever
And that those were his only options. Dude could have gone the Jennings route. Dude could have gone JUCO... DUDE COULD HAVE STUDIED AND TAKEN SAT COURSES. Can any of you honestly tell me dude put his academics first in order to try and do things the right way?
He took the easy way out. He put a black mark on the college careers of everyone on that team, and so did Calipari, because there's no way he didn't know his star recruit was having trouble passing the SAT and then "all of a sudden" passed.
I care if Rose cheated. Because so many people before and after him will be held back because of their academic inadequacies.
I agree, college isn't for everyone, and the NBA shouldn't have an age limit. But as of right now, there is.
You know why I feel bad? Because the past year I've been big brother to a 10 year old black kid from a broken home that has few people whoexpect anything out of him. His friends aren't in any better of a situation either. It's all good until they reach the age where school actually startsto matter. There are thousands of Derrick Roses out there that fall through the cracks because they don't have the athletic ability.Originally Posted by AntBanks81
Joka, you're missing my point. What I'm saying is evaluate him (and every other athlete) in his profession. Sure, he needs work on his interview skills and public speaking. School is what you make it. There are kids that can't even dribble a ball that don't do #%%+ in class and teachers don't expect anything from them. A teacher has expectations of their students just as most of the students have expectations of the teacher.
Also, it's not just a black issue.
Again, why are you concerned about their bank accounts? They have the opportunity to go to school like us all, except they get to go to college for free. Its about what they are willing to put in. If they can't manage their money or find someone trustworthy who can, OH WELL! I used to feel bad that athletes went broke after their careers but no more. I, like many of you on this board, have to work everyday. If these guys can't live on MILLIONS of dollars per year (plus they get per diem money on the road) then maybe they should wait on their opportunity or find someone who won't take them to the poorhouse.
You're missing the point. And I respect you having an opinion, offering alternatives and what not, but if we really care about these athleteslike we claim to love them, then look at it this way. And I'll throw ONE name out there that should pretty much dead this whole discussion.Originally Posted by AntBanks81

Doyung, I'm effin serious.
I believe in an earlier response I made it clear that I used some extremes, but I also provided examples of bball players criminal actions once bball dries up. Not all of them, but some.
Thank God for Jennings because now he has opened up a new avenue for HS bball stars. Am I wrong that Jennings came out after Rose? There was no established path when Rose graduated.
I would doubt that academics were placed ahead of the athletics, but can you verify that he never studied for the test? I haven't heard how many times he failed at this point.
I respect your opinion, but I disagree with you.
Maybe the system should be re-evaluated. Maybe we should establish athletic academies that prepare these kids better.
Nah dont get me wrong, what went on wasnt the right thing to do but I just dont care about it because I look at these dudes strictly asathletes and nothing more. Everyone was being used in the situation. Rose used memphis for the year he was there to Prep him for the league and Cal used Roseto get to the Natl Title gameOriginally Posted by doyung9
