When buying shoes

I'm new to the shoe game and am wondering :

If I were to buy some Jordans/Nikes(Pre-owned or New) and they don't have my true size, do I go half size up or down?

What do you guys do personally?

TTS or bust. Foamposite materials I go .5 up. Went TTS on my Amare Hyperposites and they're awful tight even after some wears.

I would go half up. But jordans are a little wide though...

There is no umbrella answer since the shoe cut differs depending on the shoe.
