So I'm getting into this book from Dinesh D'Souza. As usual with virtually all his works he provides staggering evidence. I thought that I'd take the time to ask, what IS so great about America? Does our freedom comes at a price? A price other countries pay for?
America is under attack as never before. Not only from foreign terrorists, but also from within. Islamic terrorists declare America the "Great Satan." Many Europeans complain about America spreading its cultural wasteland. And perhaps worst of all, here in our own country, those on the political Left still blame America for every ill in the world. Left-wing multiculturalism -- dominant in our own schools and universities -- teaches students that Western and American culture is no better than, and probably worse than, Third World cultures. Does this imply the death of the West? Quite the opposite, says the author. In his new book he takes on all of America's critics and proves them wrong. The author claims that the flood of immigrants coming to America proves that our values, our system, our freedoms, and our culture are irresistible and superior. The problem, he asserts, is our own inability or refusal to celebrate what makes America great. He takes the alleged "sins of the West" and debunks the myths propagated by the Left: 1. Slavery? The West is unique not in having slavery but in abolishing it. 2. Colonialism? The author, an immigrant from India, gives two cheers for British colonialism, pointing out that the sons and daughters of colonists are the beneficiaries of Western law, culture, education, opportunity, and prosperity. 3. Decadence? Who is truly virtuous, he asks, a society that enforces Talibanic edicts or the West, where virtue is a free-will choice? Where else in the world has the value and potential of the individual been more fully realized than in America? In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on our country, there is a clear understanding of the moral basis of Western civilization is needed now more than ever. This book offers a powerful defense for America and exposes the truth about who our enemies really are.

Our currency is #1(until they deem it time for one world currency) and we have the best military, which is both good and bad.

Good - We never have to worry about wars really.

Bad - If we ever have to revolt as a people, there's gonna be too many lives lost, and we might not/probably won't even win.

USA is one of the most capitalist countries too, but it comes at a hefty price.

It's not really built for the weak, but those tough enough to thrive will comfortably survive.

the Healthcare industry

Obesity

Gun violence

Resource consumption

Class disparity

Racism

In light of everything that has happened in the past 10 or so years, there is really nothing great about the US anymore. The economy is ****, freedom and liberties are trying to be taken and already has been in some aspects and people are running scared from internal terrorism (bombings, shootings, etc.)

Number one in obesity problems, racism, the healthcare system and the amount of debt that the US carries is astounding.

Our currency is #1(until they deem it time for one world currency) and we have the best military, which is both good and bad.

If you're speaking in a sense that the USD is the universal point of reference for currency, then I agree (comparison of XXX vs USD, default currency for many online purchases, status in reserve currency etc). But if you are talking actual value, it's dying and has been since the early-mid 2000s. GBP, EU and even our CAD (sometimes) values are higher than the USD.

Not sure if you were being sarcastic about the "staggering evidence" remark but I didn't see much empirical evidence for this country's greatness in that excerpt.

Statistically, the U.S. is average-below average in education and health, average-below average in happiness levels and satisfaction, but "great" at being obese, above average in watching TV, and the leader of incarceration rates.

The only things that make the U.S. great (great as in globally/historically prominent, not great as in "very good") are its international military involvement, as well as the globally recognized English language and dollar (recognition that is largely rooted in global military involvement labeled as "spreading Democracy".) Funny how the current two-party government, a perversion of real democracy that the forefathers warned against, is always prepared to invade countries in its name.

To say that abolishing slavery makes this country great is laughable. The same constitution that stated that all men are created equal is the same one that turned a blind eye to the rights of abducted African slaves and its very own women for centuries.

The same freedoms and resources that make the United States "great" are the same things that keep citizens complacent, distracted, and mediocre.

nah

why does it matter?

before i get called ignorant, because that's y'all favorite word, if i make the most

of the opportunities i'm afforded and make the best life i can for my family and me

why should i care if America is the greatest country on Earth? idk i just feel like

i'm too busy living my life and making a way for myself to care about what's so great about America.

i'm not a slave, i can say what i please, live where i please, and so on. i simply just don't care.

i mean if something catastrophic happens with our currency then that's one thing but...all of y'all

who say it's not so great...what you gone do about it? you gone move? well move then, problem solved, right?

The quality of being "great" is a term that broadly implies that something is infallible and indefatigable in its existence. I don't think America is the greatest place on Earth, but I do believe it is a better place than other environments I could be living in for the long run, as long as I live. You might interject that I don't have the hardships that you might have in your communities or elsewhere in inner cities where education is down-trodden and social living conditions are poor, but alas we are talking about the global perspective of what could make the USA the greatest country right now. From that perspective I will point out some key things worth mentioning from my knowledge.

Our health care system is something people will look at and say is totally broken; I'll partially agree to that. However, our medical research and quality of care is the best in the world, barring costs and insurance policies. Someone I know had a malignant baseball shaped tumor in his chest and had a nationally-recognized surgeon to open up his chest, take it out, and check the rest of his innards by hand to find other cancerous growths, after conducting biopsies of his lymph nodes months in advance to figure out just how much his cancer spread and doing several rounds of chemotherapy. He is vacationing up in Michigan three months after his surgery and doing all sorts of physical activity like kayaking and what not. Thanks to his insurance policy he was able to get it paid for, but also he had the support of years of honed medical practice and expertise to extend his life. I don't think other people in 3rd world countries have that same advantage of life-saving medicine, and for that reason alone, I think maybe it is worth nominating that the US' knowledge of medicine is the greatest in the world. Now, is the cost of medicine reasonable in the US compared to other countries? By and large, not at all when healthcare is free or nearly-free in countries like Canada or France. This is a significant problem we will have to fix in the next few years, because it has serious implications for the US in the long term if we do not change the laws for how we do health care in this country.

Besides our global leadership in medicine, we are probably the strongest in technology and innovation. That means R&D in all sorts of industries the US might be involved with. Recently, people are saying that we are losing our cutting edge in technology to Asian countries such as South Korea or China. Samsung of South Korea rivals our native Apple Inc. in the smartphone market and holds lots of ground in LCD/OLED R&D used in HDTVs, tablets, and phones. We concede that expertise because they've taken the lead on that field. China mass-produces lots of our consumable goods, because the US does not have the same industrial manufacturing capabilities, not to mention the same amount of disregard on the environmental damage on pollution or working conditions. In most Chinese manufacturing towns such as the one Foxconn (manufacturer of iPhones/iPads etc.) is located in, thousands of young Chinese people wake up every day in the same company dormitory to go to work building consumer products for 12 hours at a time. That is what a lot of Chinese people look forward to in the pragmatic sense in their lives. I will reiterate again that the US is still the impetus for these particular working lifestyles in other countries worldwide and our consumer market dictates what will be built in foreign countries where the living conditions we take for granted are not guaranteed by any means.

Now China, on current matters regarding innovation & technology, is trying to catch up to what we have been doing for decades. Regardless of how they have accomplished building their next battleship or stealth fighter, they are limited by lots of glaring social problems that are prevalent in their country. Niketalk, how many of you would honestly feel motivated to wake up every day and manufacture the same part for some high-tech weapon if your family cannot afford to send your kid to the best local university and live in some shanty apartment surrounded by millions of the same kind of people? It is research-proven by neurologists and sociologists on any sort of magnitude that creativity & innovation are intangible skills that cannot develop when one is under stress. Many of our brightest scientists, engineers, or physicians do not come from the slums of some manufacturing town; they come from a nice family suburban home where they are given the freedom to pursue hobbies, ideas, and learn from unique experiences. Can anyone name a similar Asian college that rivals the combined innovative output from institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Ohio State (had to thrown in my college :smokin), etc.?

I will conclude by addressing some of the cynical points of views on the US: social freedom is an ongoing process that does not often have a definitive means to an end. We are not going to absolve the lack of proper education funding for the poorest American communities overnight, and we are not going to be able to provide everyone with a family practitioner they can rely on for proper health advice. Above all, we are being more cognizant of the political problems that are interfering with the US' progress in life, but as a people, we need to ACT and LEAD on these issues rather than sit back and wait for someone else to take the initiative. For years we have been great at doing this, and I think we are still capable of greatness if we take the more informed paths in our endeavors.

name another country that has military bases all over the world

could you imagine if another country asked if they could have a base in our homeland? we would look at them like :rollin

We are the best simply because our military spending. No one on the planet can even come close to rivaling us that's how much we spend. If all the countries in the would teamed up and went to war with us it's still a good chance we would win to put it into perspective.... It's not about us being the best in those individual categories (we aren't the best in any, not even healthcare????) what we are the best at is power and control. We hold the world at gun point and threaten with our power over wealth and might. America really is a tyrant and bully....
