As someone who worked with many wealthy clients, I observed that most of them that were self made were grouped into one of three areas. The first was owning their own business. Not only that, but they had numerous people working for them making money for them so in effect they multiplied their income sources. Second was being involved in Real Estate. Since everyone needs to live somewhere it's a safe bet to invest in real estate that brings in cash flow or at least be in the middle of the transaction between the buyer & seller (realtor). Third was a disciplined investor. None of them went for the home run (although they may have gotten lucky a couple times). Instead, they stayed invested in equity assets for long periods of time and stayed focused on the long term instead of the short term movements of the markets.
A fourth, much less common way, was that the person had built up their business over a long period of time and then sold it to someone else. Either way, all of the above methods take a lot of work and dedication and focus over a LONG stretch.
