Vermont passes a law to require labeling of GMOs

Im already set on moving to Tennessee and having my own farm. Grow my own fruits and veggies will save me money and enhance my health since I'm eating the real deal. Friend of mine is planning the move also and plans to grow in door so we can sell all season.

Its old but true. Eating natural food and exercise is the key to a long healthy life. Chemical manipulation will isn't gonna change that.

Man is an omnivore. For most of our history we were hunter gatherers, in fact we ebe just that. The ideal human diet consist of meat, veggies, fruits, nuts; cut back on processed foods, dairy and bread stuff (which if you think about diary and bread are processed also.)

The issue is money, ar least for me. I don't make a lot of it, I eat relatively healthy, but the arrogance of youth will always befall man. I drink lots of water, but McDonald's is four quarters, a dime and a nickel..sometimes that's all I got. I'd honestly rather buy beer than healthy food somedays. One day ill own a farm(ranch), probably won't grow my own veggies, but i do want to raise my own beef, chicken, lamb and duck. I will grow something I can barter for veggies though... Can't wait. Biodiversity is the name of the game.

FINALLY one state has the balls to do this.

If you guys aren't familiar with GMO's you should be.

Antibiotics are injected into the bacteria of the crop causing the crop to be resistant to other antibiotics and some of the stuff that they use is a weedkiller called RoundUp.

The EU and Russia has outright banned it citing that GMOs are too dangerous after testing on rats has led them to getting tumors, cancer, diabetes, obesity.

We should definitely be in the know in what we put in our bodies and our kids bodies.
Can you link us to some of the peer reviewed articles that demonstrate the adverse effects of consuming GMOs?
agreed, need proof.

Awesome to see. Thumbs up to Vermont.

I marched in San Francisco last weekend in the global march against Monsanto day. I think 2.5 million marched.

It doesn't just end there, though @BlackSheep08. What we've been taught to eat in general is not human food in any way shape or form. Forget the additives, GMO's, hormones etc. every animal on the planet has a diet specifically genetically tailored for their biology, yet we think we're excluded from the list. People should really ask the question; what are humans designed to eat?

Culture disconnected us from what we are, what we eat, and what keeps us alive. Purposely, by the way.
How'd you hear about this and I'd like to know about some in the future

If there's no proven adverse effects, why not just add the label?

I don't see why this has been such a big deal.

Does it matter? The fight is about whether companies should label GMO foods. We already allow labeling for all types of things; as far as I'm concerned (as a person who actually reads and makes decisions based on labels) our packaging should be a dissertation on how that item got into my hands, from extraction to consumption, I want to know every part of the process on my label. People should know everything they can about what they are being sold; it creates confidence in the market. It is also a responsibility of American corporations, they are here to provide a service for us, because of the great benefit they receive, we should be able to hold corporations to high standards. We already label ingredients, why not let us know if they genetically modified our foods?

Personally, I'm not super high on science, science changes far to often to place ones absolute faith in sciemce, there is a reason why there is a high level of scrutiny when it comes to science and the courtroom. The jury is still out on GMOs but as far as letting me know if my foods have been genetically modified, yea I want to know.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be labels. I'm just interested in the research behind statements like this:

below is a link to a picture on twitter of a lab rat fed GMO corn. look at it at your own discretion.

obviously humans can withstand more than rats, but a steady diet of this junk and you have yourself walking down the path of pharmaceutical slavery or death.

i don't understand how some could not care about this issue. about being fed toxins daily because of lobbyists and corruption. you are what you eat. do some research and make an effort to inform others why they're getting sick and need to take medicine for the rest of their life. humans aren't here to be hooked up on pills, but the improper diet front loaded by gmo's and other chemicals has America waddling into obesity.

in what world should a weed grow 10 feet tall—a weed the result of gmo and pesticides—and need to be destroyed with a flamethrower? that isn't natural people. put an end to this before it's too late.

$$$$ because agro-copmanies think labeling will hurt their profit margins.

As a matter of fact, the reverse is true. I try my best to eat as natural as possible

This is going to be an issue for a long time. I find a lot of my middle class peers that are unable to eat healthy because its time consuming and expensive. Man... when we were doing our undergraduate in college, the things we would eat.... I'm surprised I didn't end up like that GMO rat lol.

i live in TN and go to farmer markets often. the food does cost a little more but taste so good and fill you up faster

examples i cooked wings from walmart a few days ago me and girl eat like 7 each... Bought some wings from the farmers market they were smaller but we ate 3 each and was full

Cooked our regular meatloaf with beef from farmers market and we actually had lots of leftovers vs store bought meat

I buy alot fruits and stuff from the market as well

Walmart sell good meat like in the freezer etc for good low price. You got to read the labels man. Alot of those labels will say grain fed or no hormones added. Once you find a good brand you trust stick with it

:lol How in the world is putting a 'cigarette' warning type label on a food item not going to hurt consumer confidence? Plus imagine the cost involve in labeling food items?

I am all for knowing what you're putting in your body but this mandate is just ridiculous.

I will leave this here...

What is the economic impact of labeling?

The cost of labeling involves far more than the paper and ink to print the actual label. Accurate labeling requires an extensive identity preservation system from farmer to elevator to grain processor to food manufacturer to retailer (Maltsbarger and Kalaitzandonakes, 2000). Either testing or detailed record-keeping needs to be done at various steps along the food supply chain. Estimates of the costs of mandatory labeling vary from a few dollars per person per year to 10 percent of a consumer’s food bill (Gruere and Rao, 2007). Consumer willingness to pay for GE labeling information varies widely according to a number of surveys, but it is generally low in North America. Another potential economic impact for certain food manufacturers is that some consumers may avoid foods labeled as containing GE ingredients.
