US Government Headed to Shutdown

I know you are being hyperbolic to prove your point. So, I won't argue about the carrots example. I will give it to you that local bureaucracies at times expand way to large and become inefficient. When adds excessive burden on regular folk. However, sometimes these roadblocks are not because they are a natural function of government but are barriers others in society lobbied to rent seek.

But I will ask you to consider that sometimes you want the government to be overbearing. You want them to force schools to desegregate, you want them to tell emergency rooms that can't deny you care, you want them to tell insurance companies they can't deny you because of preexisting conditions, you want them they can't deny a black person service because of their skin color.

When people complain about big government infringe on their freedoms, they sometimes forget that some of the freedoms they enjoy are because of government intervention. And with more good interventions their freedoms and options could be expanded. If there is great public transportation that opens up the job market for poor people, if there is affordable healthcare and housing available then it strengthens a workers bargaining power, free childcare give working class people more options, EIC lefts folk out of poverty, universal pre-k, and community college or trade school enhances the economic prospects for young people, municipal cable lefts folk escape their ISP gouging them, the Consumer Protection Bureau has returned billions back to consumers, and antitrust regulation protect jobs in smaller markets

I really think your main issue is not that you don't like the government. It is that you're like many people are upset at what it uses its resources and energy on. If was put to task with helping regular people and not the richest of the rich, I feel your option on the institutions would improve.

Yeah, I feel you. Of course a lot of good things have come of it like all you have mentioned.

Then you got public schools for example, why do we have horrible schools? You can’t blame anyone else but the government. They are running the show there.

Why was my high school on the regular side of town a 25% graduation rate while my sisters on the rich side was 95%? They were both public schools, one just had a lot more funding.

Your last paragraph hit the nail on its head. Look at your paycheck, you work about 3 months a year for free for the government. That’s what pisses me off, why is it that our taxes are going to the military and maybe space force when we got people with poison water and kids in broke schools?

Our ideas are so screwed in the country. What do we need the strongest military for when we can’t even take care of our damn selves?

I’m just giving examples here, I could go on forever.

You have ****** schools because of tax and housing codes. Tax and housing codes that let us be honest, the public want to be enforced too.

Schools are premilary funded through property taxes and are not pooled, that means schools in affluent areas get way more funding than schools in poorer areas.

Politicians that try to change the way schools are funded or tried to using busing to tie the educational fates of poor and rich kids, or try to allow affordable housing to be built in affluent areas, got voted out, and continue to get voted out. Then people sued and used the courts to roll back the regulations that were put in place. More affluent people want their kid's school to be good, they hate when the government tries to make all schools of equal quality. Right now there are tons of communities that are trying to leave large school districts are formed smaller ones because they don't want to tax money helping poor kids.

And of course, there is a harsh racial element to it.

Things are this way because enough of the public wants it this way.

My thing is, they’re not paying you what exactly are they threatening you with? No back pay either? Lol so we just doing favors? I’m not saying walk out and never come back but somthing needs to come my way daily for any of that to happen. I’m not going business as usual

The ones going to work will get paid backpay when the government reopens. Also, the ones using sick days will get those paid as well. The only people who are not getting back pay are people who are not going to work and not using sick or vacation days.

Most people, with jobs, do not get paid when they don't work.

Most people with jobs don't face economic calamity because a deranged bigot is holding their paychecks hostage over something we a) can't build b) he promised someone else would pay for.

Your last sentence is one of my problems. The way this country works is the majority rules and by default the minority gets screwed.

We all know who the majority is and they will stop at nothing to get their way. Like you were saying earlier, voter fraud and everything else. This should stop now but of course it will be a million years before anything has passed and still nothing will change.

THEY ARE WORKING FOR FREE.

Most people with jobs don't face economic calamity because a deranged bigot is holding their paychecks hostage over something we a) can't build b) he promised someone else would pay for.

But jobs often cut hours due to budget restraints. And lay off workers, generally, when corporations decide different routes in the private sector.

Anyone working will receive back pay. Their pay is delayed. They are not working for money they will never see.

Yeah, probably taxed at a higher rate and the back pay isn’t guaranteed always.

Contractors also don’t get paid.

Famb the answer is not to disengage from the system. The people conducting the finesse want you to do what.

When people disengage, it makes it easier for one group to lock in minority rule (a minority in a numerical sense, not racial).

Like gry60 gry60 said, the answer is not you throwing your hands up and act like this are intractable, activism is the answer. The answer is to mob up and up run up to your city council meetings, town halls, and the polls.

The GOP is trying to install a diet apartheid state before their numbers dwindle too low. Disengaging now just helps their cause.

Contractors also aren't working. The people working will receive back pay. Without doubt.

I support lower taxes.

All federal employees will get back pay, no matter if they worked during the shutdown or not. Trump signed it.

Since it’s normal pay, it will be taxed the normal rate. The last shutdown, I made a lil extra.

It didnt really expose that at all though. How little Americans save and percentage living paycheck to paycheck has been known for some time..

First time I am hearing about it non-stop on the news, is what I meant.

Shouldn’t even have to worry bout if u got something saved or not with this ...not getting paid cuz the president wants to build some bs wall...a damn joke

This shutdown has really exposed how much many people save.
I can see the TSA workers in the DC no having savings. Houston? Well that’s a different story. They make damn near the same as DC TSA workers and the price of living is stupid cheap in the H.

I see your points.

I don’t want anything to do with apartheid.

Democrats gotta come with some fire though if they actually want to get people to vote. Only reason Donald trump is president right now is becasue most people weren’t stoked on Hillary and sat it out instead of voting for her.

But he isn’t really doing a great job at securing a second term either at the moment. :lol

99 was a big year for the internet changing big time with the birth of Napster, Xanga, Live Journal, Blackplanet etc. but even before then AIM was launched in 97 for only aol users then, Asian Avenue was also founded in 97, ICQ founded in 96. There had been geocities hosted websites since 94, it goes on

basically useless.
