Unpopular Opinion(s) Thread

Explain why please.

I am not trolling you, I am trying to have a legit conversation.
Had a great aunt dating this awesome gent for 15years.
Guy almost croaked and she wasn't allowed in because she wasn't the spouse or next of kin.
No kids, although they expeditiously did get hitched that same year after that.

Not to derail the thread but it didn’t seem like he was talking about reality of circumstance but rather the mentality of thought. I understood his comment to mean that black people back then had more optimism / belief / conviction / community centric mindset and were a force for positive change in the (horrific) society around them. And now reality of today’s circumstances are improved from a numbers game perspective but that intensity of mental fortitude and mental strength and conviction toward driving change has wavered.

My unpopular opinion - obesity and opioids are a plague rotting the country from the inside out.

Even if he was referring to "mentality". The mental ceiling for a black person back then isn't as great as it is now. I doubt as many black kids were growing up back then thinking they would grow up to be president. Mental "intensity" isn't really something that is "quantifiable". Again I think this is a product of glorification of history. There are plenty of black activists today that have just as much conviction in their community activism. And contrary to popular belief I don't think every black person back then was like that. Some people were likely too busy trying to survive the day to day dangers of being black back then. People like to sh** on the black lives matter movement but that movement is a global force of change whether you agree with them or not. They made a lot of people start to pay attention to many issues affecting minority groups.

Balance(something that’s gone by the wayside in society in recent years). Assuming we’re talking about a healthy relationship between parents.

I think it’s best for a child to have both parents involved so the child can have access to health and honest to masculine and feminine perspectives, also how one operates in their own their own romantic partnerships is learned from parents. It helps children grow healthy relationships their peers. Also, money. A PS5 is a lot easier to buy when you have someone to split it with. :lol

Family unit was much tighter, everyone wasn't as self-centered. Supporting our own (such as business) now comes across as very contrived.
That generation had to do those things in order to survive because even their dollar wasn't respected outside of Black circles. It literally didn't matter if you were willing to overpay for the best stuff back then because very few people in white America were taking your money.

Wanna buy groceries without risking your life? Go to the black-owned store, even though it could be further away from where you live than the white-owned store (so you had to spend more time and gas to feed yourself and your family). Black grocers themselves probably didn't get the best produce from suppliers because the USDA was known to keep the best land/farm lots for white people, and I wouldn't be surprised if those grocers were getting overcharged with impunity too.

I also disagree that everyone wasn't as self-centered; otherwise, so many black liberation organizations wouldn't have succumbed to infiltration from state and federal law enforcement agencies (it wasn't white people snitching on the whereabouts of civil rights leaders; it was the barbershop owner, the protest photographer, the BPP member, and they weren't working for the government for free).

Romanticizing the black unity of the Jim Crow era is an exercise in selective remembrance IMO.

I can see it…

I wonder if anyone has tried a sweet potato hash brown…

Again, marriage is needed for all of this to happen?

For the healthiest, optimal experience, I’ll say yes. If one has a kid with someone, moves in together, raise a child together and STILL won’t get married. Somebody don’t trust somebody and they’ve already stepped outside the realm of “healthy”. Please don’t think that distrust isn’t leaking into other facets of the relationship. Co-parenting works, especially if the parents don’t get along, but it works like a spare tire works. It’s a means to an end, but at some point you gotta buy an actual tire.

I'd agree that marriage is optimal (not saying otherwise doesn't work). I see kids without it subconsciously yearn for it.

I feel like marriage is the end goal for alot of people and once they get there, they let themselves go

It's a catch 22

All the people I graduated with that are single are still in shape and those who got married gained alot of weight and dress sloppy

Same. But I guess what's important is which group is happier

Marriage isnt a requirement to successfully raising an individual to becoming a great asset to society.
Not that I'd disagree, but it surely helps in the long run, especially when it comes to teaching people the ability to love.

unpopular or maybe popular opinion: The 90s / early 00s had better top tier talent and the current day has much better depth. And i’m talking about everything that matters.

Tyson, Jordan, Shaq etc
Women
Food (less so here but lack of options made it feel that way)
Music

now the depth is better. especially for women there’s millions of gorgeous everyday instagram and social media birds. top tier is lacking though no “IT” women like a prime Jennifer Connelly / Jessica Alba
