Unpopular Opinion(s) Thread

You can try to “teach” someone to be stoic, or they can learn through experiences but yeah I dont thinm uou can ever be truelly stoic if you arent naturally like that.

Marcus Aurelius disagrees. It is all about education, control of ego, then awareness of self. However, there are plenty things wrong with stoicism.

Stoicism is an easy one word representation I use.
Probably means different things to different people.

For someone like me who is naturally extremely emotional and came from an upbringing with an extremely overly sensitive and emotional mom it is an easy way / word to set some guardrails for the lens I view life through.

It’s not that I really expect my personality to drastically change but it does really really help me not make decisions emotionally. It helps remind me that emotions (both good and bad) pass and what remains are actions.

Example > i sucked at undergrad. i got so caught up in why it’s pointless to go to class, i’m learning stuff i don’t need, i want to party, i want this i want that etc...all driven by emotions of wants or some philosophical outlook. Ended up with somewhere around a 3.0 or so and with nothing much to show for it (eg no solid internships etc).

Fast forward to my masters. Circumstances not drastically different / my emotional feelings about random stuff not that different but my actions were very different. Didn’t let emotions dictate my day to day or moment to moment life. Attended all classes, completed all work, did a great internship, graduated summa cum laude at the top of my class and had great job offers. Ironically, i did it in a subject i actually have no interest in (accounting, CPA now) but logically made sense for me to build a technical base of knowledge in to further my choices down the road of operational positions I could transition to.

I don’t think you can teach someone to stoic. That’s moreso personality driven, and as someone who is “stoic” I don’t think ppl not that understand the unintentional barriers it puts up.

Also, Jordan Peterson comes off like a character, and tries to present himself to be smarter than is. He’s Kanye if Kanye read a book and tried appear stoic, and told ppl to “clean your room.”

What has he said that you don't agree with?

I view Stoicism as the OUTWARD expression of "not caring." Not being affected. Like the "Iceman" Dean Malenko.

I don't think it means you TRULY aren't affected by anything but it is just the outward display of IT.

Someone can LEARN to be stoic the same way someone can LEARN to have a more pleasant demeanor.

They can LEARN from another person or they can LEARN from themselves.

Maybe the word should be COACHED and not TAUGHT (which is essentially the same thing to a degree).

But yea, Stoicism isn't a "you either got it or not"type of trait.

Only time you need to be stoic is when anxiety/challenges hit. Kinda like Aang in last airbender..

20-50+ years from now, our kids/grandkids will view our generation's cancel culture as backwards and questioned it entirely

I was telling my man that there needs to be a MASS IPHONE/ANDROID hacking where EVERYONE'S cards are on the table so we can cut this cancel culture nonsense out.

that’s deep. it’d be like everyone being naked. there’s so many fake layers of civilization built up through hypocrisy and cancel culture

Imagine generalizing like this and then using the word “evolved” instead of involved.

Yet people really into football are the dumb ones...
Clearly you’ve overly evolved.

Imagine not having the reading comprensión skills to apply that to said sentence...

Outside of the political and Black interests threads, much of niketalk is like alabama, georgia, and the rest of the south during jim crow.

Romeo Santos sounds like he’s begging his wife to peg him in every song.

His voice is wildly annoying and I can’t stand him.

5 day work week > 4 day work week...four day weeks felt like a grind (mentally), I worked well into the evening hours, imagine the commute from ten hour days (if you have a long-ish one)

the notion of the 40-hour workweek is what needs to go.
