Exclusive: Michael Crabtree speaks about the fight, his suspension, and getting blamed for Talib grabbing his chain

Michael Crabtree is not happy that his two-game suspension got cut down to one game on Tuesday.
“I was looking forward to no games,” the Raiders receiver said in a phone interview with The Athletic on Tuesday night after the suspension was reduced. “But there is nothing I can do about that.”
Crabtree is also not happy with the way his role in Sunday's fight with Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib is being portrayed. For the second straight season, Talib pulled a gold chain from around Crabtree's neck, but the league said Crabtree came in looking to settle a score.
“The league said it was premeditated on my part,” Crabtree said. “You know what premeditated is? When you say you're going to do something, do it, and then laugh about it with the media after the game. Like he did last year. That's all on him …
“I'm not trying to get revenge. I'm trying to get a catch in my 122nd straight game and help my team win a big game. I don't want to get kicked out. I know what's at stake for my team.”
Crabtree said he has no idea why Talib doesn't like him, and he doesn't care.
“I am just playing ball, man,” Crabtree said. “ESPN said that I taped the chain to myself before the game because I was worried about it. I didn't. I don't care about no chains. I am just playing ball. Not worried about nothing. I don't like how the whole thing got flipped and I am the bad guy.”
Crabtree and Talib's two-game suspensions were both cut down to one game after separate appeals hearings on the phone on Tuesday afternoon. One of the biggest things Crabtree argued against was the league's initial finding that he punched cornerback Chris Harris Jr. in the opening minutes of the game, on the play before he got tangled up with Talib. Thus the premeditation charge.
“I was just blocking Chris Harris and then he looked at me sideways,” Crabtree said. “I always block like that. The Raiders receivers take pride in how they block. I didn't punch him. Just blocked up. Watch the tape.”
Then Crabtree and Talib got tangled up on a run-blocking play. Talib ripped off Crabtree’s gold chain again and Crabtree drove him to the sideline and then to the ground, where Crabtree was jumped by other Broncos players.
“He took my chain off and I blocked him to the whistle,” Crabtree said. “Yeah, I blocked him to the ground, but I didn't jump on him. They jumped on me. It was seven against one.”
Talib pulled Crabtree's helmet off. The Raiders offensive linemen joined the party and a lot of punches were thrown, with Raiders guard Gabe Jackson also ejected because he shoved an official out of the way. (Jackson was ejected but is not getting suspended — though he should expect a FedEx package from the league office requesting a lot of money soon.)
As the players almost got in a full-scale brawl, Crabtree and Talib backpedalled and threw wild punches until they were in the end zone. Finally, they were separated and ejected.
Crabtree said he was more in disbelief than furious when Talib snatched off his necklace for the second time.
“'C'mon bro, we playing ball or what?'” Crabtree said. “I don't have anything to do with that. I don't have a problem with him. I can't figure it out. It's all him.”
The two both hail from the Dallas area, but Crabtreee swears there is no history or beef before last year's regular-season finale, when Talib had told reporters he always hated Crabtree's chain and was going to snatch it.
“I don't know what he is wearing two weeks ago, or how he played,” Crabtree said. “I stay out of the way, don't talk much and just worry about myself and my team.”
That is true. This is only his second interview this season.
For some reason, Crabtree just rubs some cornerbacks the wrong way. In the Week 3 loss at Washington, Josh Norman said Raiders receivers Crabtree and Amari Cooper were talking trash before the game, how they were going to put up 200 yards and that Crabtree “sucks.”
“He made up that whole story,” Crabtree said Tuesday. “Nobody said nothing to him. For some reason, people like talking about me. … It's not about the chain, it's about disrespect and they letting people get away with it.”
Who is they? The league and the media, Crabtree said. The NFL didn't penalize or fine Talib for breaking Crabtree's chain last year, and reporters laughed at both Talib's and Norman's comments after the respective games.
“The league is going to do whatever they want to do,” Crabtree said. “I just try and stay in my lane. Today, I had to speak up for myself a little bit.”
Tuesday morning, NFL vice president of communications Joe Lockhart had said that a two-game suspension was “designed to appropriately discipline a player, but also get their attention.”
They definitely got Crabtree's attention. And though he is disappointed, the one-game suspension win saves Crabtree $376,647 in salary and means he can play in a Dec. 10 game in Kansas City that could be for the AFC West lead.
Seth Roberts will start in Crabtree's place and rookie receiver Isaac Whitney was promoted from the practice squad to take his roster spot for a week. Cooper is questionable for Sunday's game against the Giants with a concussion and an ankle injury, and if he can't go, Cordarrelle Patterson and Johnny Holton will both see a lot of action. They each had deep catches in last week's win over the Broncos.
That was one the good thing to come out of Sunday's melee. Crabtree showered and went up to a box and watched his team win and improve to 5-6 without him and Cooper.
“We got a deep team, man,” Crabtree said. “We're loaded. Johnny, CP, Seth … We can go as far down the roster as you want to go and we got ballers. I have nothing but confidence in them, and it was fun to watch them step up and make plays like I know they can.
“That was a big win. I'm just mad I couldn't be a part of it because of some guy and his love of chains.”
Adam is a broncos homer.
Damn, I guess he took it personally?

****in Mark Davis man. You already know this will count as a home game.
