Grand Seiko dials are works of art. Beautiful pickup.

I'm looking to get my son his first watch, and I'm not sure which direction to go. I started out looking at a Tissot PRX, but that quickly escalated to considering an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, a Tudor Black Bay Chrono Panda, or even a Rolex Datejust with a Jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel, though I'm trying to stay closer to the price range of the Omega and Tudor. What would you recommend for a first luxury watch? Any leads?

How old is your son, what is the occasion, and what is your budget? There are alot of important factors missing, especially his maturity level and what he actually wants. For reference, my first luxury watch was a Rolex that was my dad's first Rolex from the 70's that he gave me when I graduated from college. It meant so much more to me than any watch he could have bought and will always be part of my collection until the day I feel my son is ready for me to pass it on to him.

My son is still in high school, and this would be his first luxury watch. It's not just a gift, it's a reward for everything he's accomplished. He's a high honors student, won Best Portfolio, put in the work to compete at the state championship level in his sport, and recently had an outstanding music recital.

I'm looking for something that commemorates those achievements and serves as the start of his watch journey as young man.

PS. He already has some jewelry and a fairly expensive Garmin that he uses for sports.

The Tudor or Omega would be great first luxury watches for a mature high school student, IMHO. Does he show a genuine interest in watches?

If your budget is in that range, I would go with a Tudor black bay chrono. As iconic as the speedy is, I think with him being a younger guy, I would get him the Tudor. It's more robust and has better water resistance. The speedy doesn't have screw down pushers so it's more likely that he may get it water damaged. If you want to stretch your budget, I'd get a sub or DJ.

and speedy is a manual wind

id imagine many young people would be annoyed having to wind the watch every 2-3 days

i know i would

I’d go Tudor black bay. Beautiful watch based on the OG builds, and the proportions and finishes are so nice on that watch. Hot take, I like the black bay over the newer, bigger submariners.

If I didn’t get a call on the datejust, I would’ve got either a black bay 54 or panda chrono at the end of the year. Now i probably won’t until end of next year
