It's definitely about the lighting, no matter how good you are if lighting is crap it'll be grainy. Most of the time though, I don't have the best light, just decent enough. Try to take your pics outside in the sun if you can, that will produce the best pics.
I do my own focus tap,depending where you tap it, can lighten or darken your pic. If you tap on a dark area the pic brightens up and vice-versa, so I like that feature. Also don't forget the hold-tap so that the focus locks in to where you want the focus and then you can move the phone slightly.
I also use VSCO app to edit pics if it isn't of best quality, it's limited in what you can do but it's fun playing around with the contrast, sharpness, shadow, etc...
