In my opinion, this was the most talented version of Kanye as a rapper. As he progressed, he just became great at being famous.

When he was broke he was doing rap battles and spittin some decent lyrics. Rapping alongside common, mos def, and talib. It's like his goal all along was to just be rich and famous and didn't really care about The music all that much. You could say he was extrinsically motivated as opposed to intrinsically.
