MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Relatives of a 17-year-old are angry the teenager was shot and killed by a homeowner who police say was protecting her property.

The sister of the teen who died identified him as Trevon Johnson. She said he was a student at D. A. Dorsey Technical College.

“I don’t care if she have her gun license or any of that. That is way beyond the law… way beyond,” said Johnson’s cousin Nautika Harris. “He was not supposed to die like this. He had a future ahead of him. Trevon had goals… he was a funny guy, very big on education, loved learning.”

On Thursday, police say Johnson burglarized a home south of 79th Street near I-95 — just blocks away from where he lives.

The 54-year-old woman told police her surveillance system alerted her to the break-in of her home. She said she rushed home and found the teen climbing out of a window.

“She observed a subject leaving the home through the rear,” said police Det. Dan Ferrin.

Miami-Dade police said there was a confrontation and shots were fired. Police said they were on scene seconds after the shooting and gave CPR to the teen. Johnson was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“What’s wrong with her,” asked Johnson’s sister Nisha Johnson. “She did not have to shoot him.”

“It’s no reason she should have waited until I think he walked out the yard to try to shoot him,” said Harris. “If she called the police already why would she shoot him?”

Relatives said they don’t believe Johnson stole anything from the home but detectives would not confirm that.

“You have to look at it from every child’s point of view that was raised in the hood,” said Harris. “You have to understand… how he gonna get his money to have clothes to go to school? You have to look at it from his point-of-view.”

Police said the homeowner is cooperating with detectives and was taken to a police station for questioning.

“She’s a person that is a little distraught because this is her home that someone obviously was in,” Ferrin said.

Investigators said they’re still trying to sort all of this out and want the public to remember that, if possible, it’s best not to take these types of situations into your own hands.

“If there’s any type of situation that happens or they believe there’s a burglary at the home or any type of confrontation, dial 911. Have the police make that confrontation,” Ferrin said. “That’s what we’re here for.”

The case has been handed over to state attorney’s office but, so far, no charges have been filed against her.

Now that I know that... I agree with the sister that the homeowner shouldn't have shot him. Legally, if he was already climbing out of the window he was no longer in the house and was not threatening her life (at all), so it is NOT self-defense. Yeah, it sucks to get your stuff stolen, but in no world is your STUFF worth the same as someone's life. Call the cops and have them throw his *** in jail and hopefully get your stuff returned, but you have no right to kill someone over stuff. Come on, man...

I dont know bruh, dude was climbing out the window but its still her property. and they had a struggle so who's to say he wouldnt have killed her first ?

If i robbed you and you see me leaving climbing out the window, i dont think you would let me go that easy.

Completely agree with this.

I believe there was a thread for this a while back. Article says she RUSHED home--no need for all that. Plus the fact that the kid was actively leaving the scene. Homeowner was just trigger happy and looking to shoot someone.

Society is ******, no one wants to take responsibility for their own actions. Everyone wants to blame someone else. :{
 
All the lady has to say is that she was scared he was coming back at her and its probably a wrap.

If you break into peoples houses and are willing to scare people that badly peace out dog, nice not knowing you.

That goes for absolutely all colors and races too.

U right i remember this. She wasnt even home, her alarm system notified her and she rushed home. When she got home the kid was leaving and she killed him.
 
I'd rush home the moment I was notified my house was broken into and if the burglar was attempting to leave, I'd probably find a way to apprehend him. Idk if I can live with shooting and killing someone...regardless if they are in the wrong.
 
I dunno if thats the smartest idea tbh. Ya in this case it was a skinny teenager but u dunno whos really in ur house. What if its a group of 3 or 4 guys who r all armed?

Good point, it really depends on the circumstance. Add to the fact that my wife and daughter would be with me, I wouldn't risk it. I'd probably wait till the police come.

People are desperate and it's unfortunate.

Agreed if i had a wife and child at home and the alarm is saying someone broke in 1000% im rushing home but i think in this case no one was home. Plus doesnt the alarm company notify police when theres a breach/intruder? I dunno how it works, lived in an apartment my whole life never had one lol

Yeah, it's suppose to notify the dispatchers if the alarm is not turned off after a set amount of time. 
 
I used to be a wing walker at lax : hat

Easiest job ever. We would just bs and play Dominoes in between flights. There was only like 2 or 3 flights a night and all we had to do was wave the glo sticks to guide the plane in, took 5 minutes. So it was like 15 minutes of 'work' every night

Best believe I'm letting the Guns Blam on anyone

In Birmingham the same **** happened. Guy had has little man at home while he stepped out got a call from him that two guys broke into the house and he hid in the closet. Dad called the police, rushed home popped one of fools inside the house and held the other at gunpoint for the police.
